Four-Year-Old Girl Seen Wandering Barefoot In Snow, Mother Found Dead

The little girl was wandering alone in snow.

Ogden, UT - A four-year-old girl was found wandering barefoot in the snow at a playground by a good Samaritan, who took her to safety.

The incident occurred on Wednesday about 5:30 p.m., Dec. 27, according to KTVX.

Good Samaritan Marcus King was walking to the Marshall White Community Center on 28th Street to play basketball and heard the little girl calling to him from a playground that is attached to the community center. He said he didn't see anyone watching her.

“She didn’t have any jacket, no shoes, no parental supervision...," according to King.

"I saw her just dragging her poor feet in the snow, I asked her where her parents were and she shrugged, said 'I don't know.' After a little more prodding, the girl said 'her mom was laying on the floor, she wasn't paying attention and she was sleeping,'" King said.

Four-year-old Emily had crossed 28th Street on her own, then came to a park, where King found her, according to WVUE.

King brought her inside the community center and called the police, who found that the girl lived right across the street and her door was wide open.

Officers found the mother inside and determined she had died about 24 hours before due to a pre-existing medical condition.

“Officers went inside and found a 41-year-old mother dead,” Ogden Police Lieutenant Tim Scott said. “She was living alone with her mother. There is no sign of foul play. There are some pre-existing medical conditions that may have played a role," he said.

King is thankful he found the little girl before something happened to her, according to KSTU. "I just thought what if that was my kid? Even if I was OK my kid just got out, what if that was my kid?," he said.

“This is not a good part of Ogden—there’s a lot of weirdos around here, and I’m really, really fortunate and happy that I got to her, and nobody else did,” he said.

The girl is staying with her grandmother now and they are plan to meet with King to thank him in person.
