Former NFL star and convicted killer, Aaron Hernandez, was found Wednesday morning hanging from a bed sheet.
Souza Baranowski prison staff found Aaron Hernandez at around 3:05 AM, hanging from a bed sheet attached to his window cell, according to Massachusetts Department of Corrections.
Lifesaving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez, and he was transported to UMass Leominster, where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 AM.
Hernandez was in a single cell at the time he hung himself and he had attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items.
Hernandez was serving a life sentence in prison for the first-degree murder of Odin Lloyd, a semi-pro football player who was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancée.
Until last week, Hernandez had been facing charges in the double-murder drive-by-shooting of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu in 2012. Last week a jury acquitted him of those murder charges, but found him guilty of a firearm violation.
His attorneys had planned to fight the second charges and then appeal the conviction for the murder of Odin Lloyd.
Before his conviction, Aaron Hernandez was the Patriots' fourth-round pick in 2010 then gained a five-year $40 million contract extension.
Rather than make $40 million and go to the Super Bowl with this team, Hernandez made the decision to be a killer and die alone in a prison cell.
Former Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor appears to be suspicious about Hernandez's suicide, tweeting, "#RIP Aaron Hernandez...something doesn't feel right about him committing suicide..."
Hopefully Aaron Hernandez's death brings some closure to the family of Odin Lloyd, who won't have to go through another appeals process.
