A Florida politician shot a man who attacked him while running from police

Palmetto, FL – A Florida politician shot a suspect who attacked him as the suspect fled from the police.

Palmetto City Commissioner Brian Williams shot Avelino Misreal Vasquez-Perez after finding Vasquez-Perez hiding in his garage and attempting to enter his kitchen, according to the Miami Herald.

The incident started when Palmetto Police officers spotted Vasquez-Perez driving recklessly at about 10 p.m. Thursday.

Police believed that Vasquez-Perez was under the influence of alcohol and attempted to pull him over, according to the Miami Herald.

But Vasquez-Perez sped off and then crashed into a home a few blocks away. Vasquez-Perez and a passenger ran away but police officers caught the other passenger quickly, according to the Miami Herald.

Police set up a perimeter around the neighborhood in a search for Vasquez-Perez as he climbed a fence into Williams’ backyard. He then broke into the garage of Williams’ home.

Williams’ daughter, who lives next door to her father, saw Vasquez-Perez and called her father. Williams then went and got his gun and heard Vasquez-Perez trying to get into the kitchen from the garage.

When Williams confronted Vasquez-Perez at gunpoint, Vasquez-Perez attempted to push past and punch Williams, who then shot Vasquez-Perez twice, according to Palmetto Chief of Police Scott Tyler.

“He was lawfully defending home and family,” Chief Tyler said.

Williams released a brief comment.

“I am glad that everything turned out the way it did,” Williams said, according to the Miami Herald. “I guess he is doing OK and we are happy and glad that no one in my family was hurt.”

Vasquez-Perez was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover from the gunshot wounds. He faces charges of resisting arrest without violence, burglary and battery as well as various traffic violations, according to the Miami Herald.

I hate to say this, but as one who is familiar with large FL cities, in one of FL's major cities, the hero shooter would have a long road to hoe (stress and finances) to clear himself and maybe charged. In my book, it was a good shoot, but no one listens to me. Elections have consequences.
