Faculty Demands University End Chick-fil-A Contract, Claim Chain 'Fosters Hate'

The Sexuality and Gender Diversity Faculty Staff Council expressed its outrage in a letter to university leaders.

Lawrence, KS – A University of Kansas faculty council has called for a boycott of the school’s on-campus Chick-fil-A restaurant because they believe the fast-food chain is “hostile” to “marginalized and LGBTQ people.”

The Sexuality and Gender Diversity Faculty Staff Council expressed its “outrage” in a letter to Chancellor Doug Girod and other university leaders, after the school moved the eatery from a basement location to a “prime real estate” location in the Memorial Union building.

The council also blasted university leaders for creating the “Chick-fil-A Coin Toss” at home football games.

“The culture of Chick-fil-A fosters hate and discrimination on multiple levels,” the faculty group declared, calling the company a “bastion of bigotry.”

The council alleged that the chain “has a history of supporting organizations that are hostile to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people, families, and communities,” and that the company donated $1.8 million “to anti-LGBTQ groups” in 2017.

“Dan Cathy, the CEO, has stated multiple times that he supports ‘the biblical definition of the family unit’ and ‘[w]e are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say ‘we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage,’” the letter read.

The on-campus restaurant had been operating in the basement of the school’s Wescoe Hall for the past 15 years as part of a $60,000 annual lease agreement, The Kansas City Star reported.

Under the 10-year contract, the university would have been required to spend $2.6 million in upgrades if the restaurant were to stay in the basement location, so the eatery was moved to the higher-profile building over the summer, Interim Provost Carl Lejuez told the paper.

“Despite our denouncements and the university’s own moves to increase the campus’s diversity, equity, and inclusion, KU granted Chick-fil-A, a bastion of bigotry, a prime retail location in the heart of our campus,” the faculty council raged.

“The Union houses spaces that the KU community designates as safe and accepting,” the group continued. “The Union was one of the first places on campus to incorporate gender inclusive bathrooms for the comfort and validation of the experiences and range of identities of the people who walk our halls. The arrival of Chick-fil-A in this building is insulting, counterproductive, and unacceptable.”

The council declared that moving the restaurant to a more prominent location was a slap in the face to everyone who has pushed for inclusion and safety.

“Moving Chick-Fil-A to the Union and granting it a role at the start of all home football games violates the feelings of safety and inclusion that so many of us have striven to create, foster, and protect on campus, and sends a message that the Union, KU Athletics, and the administration at large are more concerned about money and corporate sponsorship than the physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing of marginalized and LGBTQ people,” the faculty council wrote.

The group urged university leaders to “rectify this situation,” and also demanded “a guarantee…that these contracts will not be renewed once expired.”

They further insisted that university must be more “transparent” about how new on-campus vendors are chosen.

“In the meantime, we will urge our members and allies to speak with our dollars as well as our words, and boycott the restaurant,” the faculty council said in the letter. “We look forward to educating the larger KU community about Chick-fil-A and working with KU to find a replacement vendor that better reflects our KU values.”

Lejuez later issued an email to staff and faculty about the council’s concerns, FOX News reported.

“Moving forward, I believe it is important to have thoughtful discussion and deliberation when we enter into contracts,” the interim provost wrote. “In the future, we will do so in a manner that is transparent and informed by our commitment to affirm diversity and to be a welcoming and inclusive campus.”

"As law enforcement officers responded to a murderous shooting spree in West Texas on Saturday, employees at a local Chick-fil-A restaurant sprang into action to feed them." Google it.

Anyone who goes to Chik-Fil-A knows that it is the best fast food restaurant out there by far. I don't typically eat fast food, but when we travel as a family, I am always surprised at how busy the place is, yet how fast the service is.

Their employees seem be be exceptionally pleasant and well-trained, and they usually say "it was my pleasure to serve you."

Each local restaurant determines their own guidelines regarding discounts to senior citizens, police officers, other EMS personnel, or those in military service.

Hey LGBTQ people, if you don’t like it, then DONT EAT THERE! Stop separating yourselves by separating yourselves. You don’t have to be loud and throw it in other peoples faces to get “equality” treatment. Just love and live your life like everyone else and you’ll be fine. Chic Fil A can give money to whomever they want to. If they gave money to LGBTQ the straight community would not be outraged. And we sure wouldn’t make such a big deal about you folks being LGBTQ so why should you?

What percentage of the population is a member of this group? Historically, majority wins and I’d say the crowds and lines at Chik-Fil-A prove the point. They need to move to the Bahamas and start their own community

I am sure that they could set up a free speech zone for the Chik-Fil-A if that would help.

Once again we see the "tolerance" of the liberal leftist at it's best. I go to Chick Fil A and never once have I seen anything that prohibits anyone for their choices. Never once have I been asked about my sexual choices, and never once have I seen them ask anyone about their sexual choices. What I have always seen and gotten is good food and great service. I just love the way that the liberal leftists are always portraying themselves as so highly educated, tolerant, enlightened, loving and well meaning that is until you disagree with their agenda. Once you do that you are the enemy and they set out to absolutely destroy you. Truth be told the liberal leftist are the more intolerant and judgmental people out there. They HATE anything and anyone who doesn't blindly follow them.

Chick-fil-a doesn't need or want your queer ass butts in their restaurant anyway. Plus, the story fails to note how much money the university makes off the restaurant nor how much money is given to them by Chick-fil-a annually. Ingrates at the least and leftist assholes most likely.

What this letter basically says is if they don't agree with our position on anything, even if they have a Constitutional right to their own beliefs, it clashes with ours so they're not welcome.

You can lace this with all the politically correct verbiage you want, it still speaks volumes to their own narrative.

The larger issue here is that national corporate chains don't need to be on college campuses, especially state college campuses. Would be better to have small businesses there. Large corporations have a large enough footprint as it is, without help from state governments. Of course, Chick-Fil-A having evil politics makes it worse, but let that not deflect from the larger, more systemic problem here.

If you don't want to eat there. ...... then don't. Let the market place decide if they stay or go. And yes I know that's not the way leftist do things. They demand this and demand that like children throwing a tantrum. Go back to your crawl space and stay there, I demand it!!!!!

Chick-fil-A is the gold standard of customer service. In all my visits to various locations with my dear friend who happens to be gay, never did we feel ostracized or singled out. Quite the opposite, a very warm and welcoming staff greeted us and attended our every need.

Get over yourself KU!

Stupid liberals, they want us to accept their stupid ass ideas, but then they become very hateful regarding conservative views or anything else they don't support. Liberals cry about how everyone should be tolerant, but then they become anything but when they attack people who support a different ideology. Furthermore, they are actually everything they say they hate.

l will no longer give any of my hard earned money to them if they let this happen. I donate money and buy there clothing all the time which they make a ton of money off of. I am tired of the minority ruling what we do. You don't like something don't do it stay way. We the majority are tired of your BS. And we are not going to put up with anymore.
