Santa Maria, CA - A suspect believed to be high on drugs, Erick Esquivel, was arrested on Saturday night for trying to kill a Santa Maria Police Officer.
According to the Santa Maria Times, the incident occurred about 6:30 PM. Santa Maria Police Officers responded to a call of a domestic fight involving Erick Esquivel, age 23. He was believed to be under the influence of some type of controlled substance and his family said that they were afraid of him.
Upon arrival, the officers located Erick Esquivel and attempted to talk with him. He began fighting, punching, and kicking the officers and refused all commands from them. At some point during the violent confrontation, Esquivel grabbed an officer's microphone cord and wrapped it around the officer's neck and began to to strangle him with it.
Erick Esquivel was eventually restrained, handcuffed, and taken into custody. He was not injured. Esquivel was charged with Attempted Murder on A Peace Officer and was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail. Police are awaiting results of a toxicology test but believe Esquivel was under the influence of methamphetamine.
The Santa Maria Police Officer who was the victim of the attempted strangulation was taken to a local hospital, treated for his injuries, and released. His name was not released. Lt. Schneider of the Santa Maria Police Department said that "It was a violent fight that lasted three to four minutes," according to KEYT.
