Hereford, AZ – An elementary school student committed suicide in a school bathroom on Tuesday morning.
Police received a call for an active shooter at Coronado Elementary School at 9:22 a.m. on Jan. 9.
The school went into lockdown, and the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office responded.
Classes were cancelled and students were bussed to nearby Sierra Springs Church to be picked up by their parents.
The Sierra Vista Unified School District (SVUSD) was providing support to the smaller Palominas District, of which the elementary school is a part.
The SVUSD released a statement on behalf of Palominas that said they were withholding the name of the deceased student until all his family could be contacted, but said he didn’t have a sibling in school in the district, according to KVOA.
They also said counseling would be available to the students and staff of the school.
Parents of other Coronado Elementary School students expressed concern about the suicide of such a young man.
"There's lots of questions," Zetich said. "Why? How did it get that far? How can I protect my daughter in the future?"
