Elementary School Placed On Lockdown After Student Shoots Himself

An elementary school student committed suicide in the bathroom of his school on Tuesday.

Hereford, AZ – An elementary school student committed suicide in a school bathroom on Tuesday morning.

Police received a call for an active shooter at Coronado Elementary School at 9:22 a.m. on Jan. 9.

The school went into lockdown, and the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office responded.

Upon arrival, officers found a 14-year-old male student dead in one of the bathrooms, KOLD reported.

Investigators quickly determined there was no other threat to students or faculty, KVOA reported.

Classes were cancelled and students were bussed to nearby Sierra Springs Church to be picked up by their parents.

The Sierra Vista Unified School District (SVUSD) was providing support to the smaller Palominas District, of which the elementary school is a part.

The SVUSD released a statement on behalf of Palominas that said they were withholding the name of the deceased student until all his family could be contacted, but said he didn’t have a sibling in school in the district, according to KVOA.

They also said counseling would be available to the students and staff of the school.

Parents of other Coronado Elementary School students expressed concern about the suicide of such a young man.

Codi Zetich has a third grader at the school, and told AZCentral he doesn’t know how the incident will affect her.

"There's lots of questions," Zetich said. "Why? How did it get that far? How can I protect my daughter in the future?"

To say that a 14-yr-old is still in Elementary School, might be a clue all by itself. Maybe this was a Special Needs child, who had a Syndrome or two, problems we'll never be able to understand. I hope there's follow-up on this story; I'd like to know where the kid got the freaking gun for one thing as well as whether he WAS mentally handicapped in some manner. My heart goes out to his family and friends.
