Dunkin' Donuts Responds After Two Cops Are Refused Service

Two Priince William County police officers were refused service by an employee at the Dunkin' Donuts in Bristow.

Bristow, VA – Two Prince William County police officers were refused service at the counter of a Dunkin' Donuts on Tuesday morning.

The officers, who both supervise the school resource officers for their department, stopped at the Dunkin' Donuts located at 12713 Braemar Village Plaza near Sudley Manor Drive for coffee at about 9:30 a.m. on May 1.

“We check on our guys at schools and make rounds. We’ve been in there before. We’ve stopped in for coffee,” Prince William County Police First Sergeant Ron Knapczyk told Blue Lives Matter.

Sgt. Knapczyk said the employee behind the counter, described as a 20-ish female whose nametag read “Tayana,” acted like he and his colleague weren’t even there.

“The manager is in the back making the donuts or something, and people are lining up behind us – and then we realize what’s happening. And we kind of look at each other. And I go to ask her if she’s not serving us because we’re law enforcement, but the manager stepped in before I had the chance,” he said.

When he got off duty, Sgt. Knapczyk wrote about what followed and posted it on his Facebook page.

“WOW! REFUSED SERVICE FOR SIMPLY WEARING A BADGE! Today on our normal rounds, we stopped into the Dunkin' Donuts in Bristow for a morning cup of coffee. An establishment we have been to on numerous occasions,” the sergeant’s post began.

“This morning we walk in and greet the girl behind the counter with a ‘good morning.’ She looks at us and doesn’t respond. We walk up to the counter and she continues to stare at us while dusting around the register. We stand there for a while and a line starts to form behind us,” Sgt. Knapczyk continued.

“I get ready to tell her we are ready to place our order when the manager walks up and asks her why she is not serving us. She nods her head towards us. The manager, who is clearly embarrassed, moved over to the next register and began to take our order. The girl then proceeded to take the order of the patron standing in line behind us. We move over to get our coffee and the manager profusely apologizes to us!” he wrote.

“You read about it happening elsewhere, but it’s a shock when it happens to you! A great morning and cup of coffee ruined by someone who has no idea who we are, just because we wear a badge we are the bad guys! I was always taught and I teach my son to respect everyone! This needs to return to this world again, or we are in for a dismal future for our kids. Blue Lives Matter!” his post concluded.

Sgt. Knapczyk told Blue Lives Matter that it took a minute for what was happening to click with him and Prince William County Police Lieutenant Shane Ash, as they stood waiting while a line formed behind them.

“We both realized it at the same time. We’re like, ‘are we actually getting refused service?’” the sergeant laughed as he retold the story, but it was clear he was bothered by what happened.

“Nineteen years and I’ve never had that happen before,” he said. “It’s ridiculous what’s going on. I was taught to respect everyone. These people aren’t respectful to law enforcement.”

Sgt. Knapczyk said that despite the manager’s horrified reaction to his employee’s behavior, he would not be returning to that Dunkin' Donuts, and it sounded as if his colleagues might be avoiding it soon as well.

“We blasted it out so that everybody can make sure not to go there,” he said.

The sergeant told Blue Lives Matter that the manager offered him and Lt. Ash free donuts as an apology, but they declined and left Dunkin' Donuts immediately.

“I didn’t want to create a scene. I just took my coffee and left. Even the woman behind us kept peeking around us trying to figure out what was going on,” Sgt. Knapczyk said. “I was shocked and embarrassed.”

Blue Lives Matter reached out to Dunkin' Donuts corporate headquarters for comment and received the following statement:

"Dunkin’ Donuts and its franchisees are committed to serving and treating every guest with respect. We have spoken with one of the guests and are reaching out to the other, and we sincerely regret their bad experience in one of our franchised locations. We value our relationships with all of our customers and want to reiterate that everyone is welcome in our restaurants.”

Blue Lives Matter also called the Dunkin' Donuts location for a comment from the manager, but had not received a return call by publication time.

I would support a complete nationwide boycott of Dunkin' Donuts by all police officers. Don't think it is going to happen, but I think it is a great idea.

It’s time this rudeness and refusal of service stops! In our area we have Starbucks and Durango Joes, and they all have a special jar where you can leave money so our officers don’t even have to pay for their coffee stops. We support our men and women in blue and love the hell out of what they do for our community. Grow up, people.

God Bless the officers. Wonder who she will call when she is beaten, robbed, sexually assulted, been in a car accident, house being broken into and any/all of the things that can happened requiring a police officer.

If we are going to go by site seniority, it should be adios joe, but it would be fine if both you and Bugger Allday "get out of here".

While I'm not a L.E.O., I take care of a Vet and former police officer.
I don't and will never condone being rude to anyone, most especially our law enforcement, fire fighters, soldiers, and our EMT's. These people stand between you and harm or death. You'd do well to remember this fact. Or imagine the next time your loved one is in danger, has a medical emergency, or fire, call your buddies or take care of it yourself. They put their lives in danger every day and alot of the time its for people who are ungrateful and uncooperative. They do it anyway and I'm sure I, nor many of us could ever do what they do. Have respect or as some once said, "keep your yap shut!"

Its always funny when that happens to cops. It happens so rarely and infrequently it's barely registers. But black people are refused service and disrespected in establishments worldwide, (Starbucks, Chilli's and recently Sambuca) The officers have the option to just take off their uniforms or simply go to a more friendly location. Problem solved.

Maybe you Blues need to understand the dislike the public feels towards cops. And maybe you should ask yourselves why we feel this way. If you say that most cops are fair, honest and treat people justly, then you need to remove the "bad apples." By allowing the bad apples to operate, the public's distrust towards you will continue.

Has anyone thought of those infamous words: "You're FIRED" to the young person(not) serving the law officers. What if they were farmers. or teachers, or clerks, or students, or .... you see where I am going with this. Unacceptable behaviour on every level!

I wonder why they didn't arrest the cashier for obstruction. Seems like she did delay the officers in getting back to traffic safety / revenue collection.

The bad apples are weeded out all the time, even though there are extremely few. Your inflated belief that there are so many bad apples just reinforces the fact that your concerns border on paranoia. You, yourself have said that you have never had a negative interaction with a police officer. Actually, you have never had ANY interaction with a police officer.

Any time you see employee misconduct, or just plain rudeness, in the news, it is a good idea to call the employee's employer and request punishment. Employers appreciate this helpful service and are usually willing to give the requested punishment.

I Agree a 1000% with you tyesalms I work as school crossing guard in NY in spring, summer ( with heat like fire) autumn and winter I am very sorry to see how parents are the first to disrespect us without appreciating that we put our lives in front of the vehicles to Protect their children, and do not teach the word respect for others.... I've always said everyone who has no respect for the police. Veterans, nurses, EMT, teachers all kinds of workers have no respect for themselves.

Senior Citizen, Maybe you need to understand, that as a snot nosed pee on employee, she doesn’t have the right to refuse ANYONE service & cause her employer, who is well known for serving police officers for decades, any embarrassment at all! She’s part of the ‘entitlement’ crowd, who has yet to get a clue in real life. Hope she never needs an officer’s help. Chances are, she will, at some point.
I personally, would refuse to ablidge.

Now this was just a dumb comment and you know it. She was wrong and deserved to be fired but to suggest an arrest in this situation is insane.

Burgers Allday
Burgers Allday

Now, c'mon EODK -- any delay is obstruction, and she did delay the officers in getting their viands. The logic is pretty airtight. If she had a defense (and she might, we haven't heard her side yet), then she can present it at trial.

Maybe all of the people who refuse to simply serve the police a cup of coffee or food should NEVER expect the police to come to their aid. You see just as they are expected to save those of you being robbed, assulted, attacked, etc. because it is their job...you are also expected to give them the coffee or food they pay for because that is also your job.

just an ongoing reminder of Obama's legacy...where foul mouthed rappers romped in the White House and Obama painted targets on the backs of law enforcement......

The manager should have fired her on the spot. This sort of nonsense should be dealt with immediately with no exception. Regardless of who is being disrespected, it's just bad business and unacceptable behavior.

Except "the public", in general, does not share your irrational opinion. The vast majority have no issue with cops at all. There is a small minority who harbor resentment, usually due to their own behavior.

I stopped going to DD years ago. They used to be a regional New England operation that made donuts in the back of every one of their stores. Now they are made in big central bakeries and trucked miles and miles to stores that are on every other street corner. They have killed the mom and pop bakeries that used to make superior products.

They are a corporate entity with little or no local conscience. It doesn't surprise me that Tanya did what she did. And, it wouldn't surprise me if corporate HR told the local manager that she cannot be disciplined.

Just stop going to DD...PERIOD!
