Doctor's Death Ruled 'Accidental' After Body Discovered Dismembered, Burned

The Spokane County Medical Examiner called Rex Porter's death an accident despite its dismembered and burned state.

Spokane, WA – The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office has determined that an anesthesiologist who was found dismembered and burned to death in his backyard died by accident.

Deputies responded to Rex Porter’s Dishman Hills home in the 2800-block of South Park Lane near the Iller Creek Conservation Area on April 9 to conduct a welfare check, KXLY reported.

Neighbors called police and said a car had been sitting in the driveway of Porter’s home with a door open for a couple of days.

Deputies found broken glass when they arrived and searched the house, KXLY reported.

They found Porter’s 29-year-old mentally-disabled son Derek in the basement with a cut on his foot and blood on his pants and initially believed that he was a squatter, the Spokesman-Review reported.

Once they figured out who he was, the man was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Deputies were ready to leave the residence when a neighbor confronted them and said the father had to be there because he was his son’s caretaker, according to the Spokesman-Review.

So they searched the 11-acre property for 61-year-old Rex Porter and found his remains in the backyard.

Police said some of his limbs had been removed but did not reveal how it had been done, the Spokesman-Review reported.

Court documents showed deputies found a burned head and torso in the fire pit, and partially-burned legs north and south of that area, KREM reported.

Investigators seized footage from surveillance cameras around the house but police have not said what was seen on those videos.

Police have not named Derek Porter as a suspect, the Spokesman-Review reported.

Despite what appeared to be a bizarre and violent crime scene, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office completed and closed the investigation into Rex Porter’s death remarkably fast.

“We found no evidence of any criminal acts leading up to his death,” Spokane County Sheriff’s Corporal Mark Gregory told the Spokesman-Review.

The medical examiner determined that the doctor died from cardiac dysrhythmia due to ingesting a toxic mix of alcohol and prescription drugs.

Rex Porter had alcohol, sertraline, trazadone, and ziprasidone in his system when he died, the Spokesman-Review reported.

Those medications are usually prescribed to treat a slew of mental disorders including depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder.

Umm, so he took the drugs, dismembered his own body and then slithered over to the fire pit and BBQ himself...Okay, gotcha! I think @Burgers Allday must be related to the M.E. to come to that conclusion.

That's a really interesting conclusion for "accidental death". I'd love to read that autopsy report. There must be a BIG something that everybody else missed.

I can see it. Only because of the drug cocktail they found in his system. He had a heart failure, fell into the fire pit and animals nearby smelled the roasting meat and did the dismembering, while feasting.

Wonder why fake new occurs? Because reporters and editors don’t listen as they move forward with clickbait headlines.

We asked our local media outlets not to use the word "dismembered" before it was ever printed or said on air because we knew what the public reaction would be. The word conjures up images of serial killers and brutality, none of which is correct. Yes, the word is grammatically correct, but words have power, and they knew it was wrong.

Here are the releases we sent on April 10, 2019, after they decided to use the word "dismembered" and the original release sent on April 7, 2019. Unless you read our FB page (https://www.facebook.com/SpokaneCountySheriffsOffice/) or receive our press releases, you probably didn't see it. Press Release from April 10, 2019 Clarification Regarding Suspicious Death Investigation on S. Park Lane

Regarding the suspicious Death investigation on S. Park Lane, this IS still an active investigation and suspicious in nature as the Medical Examiner’s Office has not determined the cause and manner of Rex C. Porter’s death nor have the Detectives determined through their investigation his death was a homicide, accidental or by some other means.

Court Documents, search warrant affidavit, prepared the day of the discovery Rex Porter’s remains, were cited and unfortunately, in graphic detail by news sources. In addition, news accounts specifically used the word “dismembered” which was a word they chose to use and was never used in the search warrant.

Again, investigators did not use the word contained in headlines. The specific information was obtained through public records and gleaned from a search warrant written the day of the welfare check, shortly after the remains were discovered in the back yard.

On April 6, 2019, the Deputies entered the residence as a welfare check, without a warrant, believing someone was in need of immediate assistance, conducting a search for the sole reason. During the search, a nonverbal vulnerable adult male, in poor hygienic condition, was located in a basement bedroom. He was provided medical attention and transported to a hospital for continued care where he remains as he is unable to care for himself. He was not arrested.

Once the search was completed, finding no one else in immediate need of assistance or in danger, Deputies secured the scene and requested the assistance of Major Crimes Detectives to continue the investigation of the suspicious death of Rex Porter. Search warrants are requested in possible criminal investigations and must state a crime. With the cause and manner of death unknown, a search warrant was needed to conduct an investigation into the death of Rex Porter and the potential crime being investigated was listed as homicide. This suspicious death investigation continues because facts and evidence have not answered those questions.

To clear up misconceptions, no one has been arrested or charged with a crime in connection with this investigation. As this investigation continues, in partnership with the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office, Rex Porter’s cause and manner of death will be determined based on the facts and evidence learned.

We urge everyone to remember there is a family who lost a loved one and friends or coworkers who lost someone close to them. Because of that, we caution anyone from rushing to judgment or speculating on what occurred.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office asks our community to join us as we keep the family and friends of Rex Porter in our thoughts and prayers during this very sad and tragic time.

General Terms and Information:

Any “unattended death” meaning a death not at a hospital or under medical care, will be investigated as an unattended death. Examples can be but not limited to, medical condition, natural causes, overdoes, suicide, accidental, etc. must be investigated by law enforcement. In these incidents, the death, by the information and facts known, is not believed to be criminal in nature and probably is not.

Depending on the circumstances, the investigation may be called a “suspicious death investigation” if it is not known if a death was criminal in nature or not. In these investigations, known information and facts do not heavily point in one direction or the other.

An investigation may be called a “murder or homicide investigation” if the known information and facts heavily point toward a criminal act.

Law enforcement must treat everything initially as a criminal investigation and preserve the scene and evidence because we (law enforcement) cannot recreate the scene afterward. If evidence is not preserved and collected correctly, it would be lost if the death was later determined to be criminal in nature.

Detained vs. Arrested: The difference between the two is whether or not a person is charged with a crime. If a person is detained, they are not free to leave but have not been charged with a crime. A person who is arrested is not free to leave and has been charged with a crime.

Press Release from April 7, 2019: Suspicious Death Investigation on S. Park Lane

Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a welfare check and located a deceased male at the premises. A vulnerable adult, who reportedly lived at the residence, also was discovered. Major Crimes Detectives and Forensic Unit personnel responded to the scene to continue the investigation.

On April 6, 2019, at approximately 11:20 a.m., Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a welfare check at a residence located in the 2800 block of S. Park Lane.

The caller reported a vehicle with its door left open had been parked in the front yard for two days, and the garage door was also open. He hadn’t seen any activity or people at the residence and advised an older adult homeowner lives there, and he cares for a younger disabled adult.

Deputies arrived, and as they attempted to contact anyone, they looked through a front window and observed broken glass on the floor and other items in disarray inside. They announced their presence and received no response. They entered the home and immediately smelled the strong odor of animal feces and urine.

During the search, a nonverbal vulnerable adult male, in poor hygienic condition, was located in a basement bedroom. He was provided medical attention and transported to a hospital for continued care where he remains as he is unable to care for himself.

Deputies located the remains of an older deceased male in the backyard of the residence and immediately secured the scene.

Major Crimes Detectives assisted by Forensic Unit personnel were called to the scene to continue the investigation once a search warrant was obtained.

At this time, Investigators are considering this a suspicious death investigation, but they do not believe the public is in any danger stemming from this incident.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the name of the decedent pending positive identification, along with cause and manner of death, when appropriate to do so.

As this is an active investigation, no further information is available.

@Exaclibr4. Your question is, I believe, the only question or comment that should be addressed. Since the statement from the County Sheriff's office said...''we found no evidence of any criminal acts leading up to his death,'' I believe it's okay to ''assume'' dad died in the car, son dragged him out, then the dismemberment, etc occurred. It's been established that the son has mental health issues so I'm thinking that dad had similar issues because of the level of psychiatric meds in his system. Alcohol, psych meds, and stress do not always make for healthy choices and I'm sad for this man and his son.

Maybe the "mentally disabled" son put the drugs in his dad's food or drink then proceeds to do the dismemberment and burning. Probably roasted some marshmallows just for drill 🙄

Article says his death was determined to be accidental, so whoever dismembered and burned his body did so after the doctor was deceased, which still makes the perpetrator a sick sob!

In the coverage here and elsewhere that I have read, you have to dig deep to find that the son had autism. That is why he needed his father as a caretaker. The son's autism was severe enough that he was mute. I suspect that the dad did die of the drugs and alcohol and the son did the rest, for whatever twisted reasons he may have had. While a crime was committed in dismembering the body, I suspect the prosecutor decided to not pursue charges because of the son's condition. It would have been a waste of taxpayer money, which is usually never a concern here in Spokane.

IseeWhereThisIsGoing

Hold on.... this headline (and many of the comments) are inaccurate. I can believe that the death was accidental. He took a combination of meds and alcohol and didn't wake up. that's the cause of death, as per the medical examiner. The dismembering and burning likely happened post-mortem; so yes, while it is click worthy, it's not really related to why he died.

If anything, the death was likely accidental, and then a crime was committed by someone else in the desecration of a corpse; but that crime didn't cause his death, so it shouldn't be treated as such.

I would imagine he died due to the reason given and the son with the disability panicked and tried to get rid of the body but did not know how. My guess is there is no murder charge but may be a interference with a corpse.
