Hillsboro, Oregon - Details are coming in on what was initially reported to be an active shooter at Hillsboro Airport on Monday.

This incident is still developing and the following information is preliminary information from witnesses, and its accuracy could not be verified at the time of this writing.

The exact chain of events isn't clear at this time, but initial details are that a man attempted to hijack a helicopter at the airport.

KATU reporter Kellee Azar reports that the suspect fired rounds in the air while trying to hijack the helicopter. An employee responded by drawing his own firearm and opening fire at the suspect.

The suspect fled from the gunfire, and then died of a gunshot wound. There are conflicting reports on if the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, or was inflicted by the police or airport employee.

KATU reports that witnesses say that they saw officers pursuing a man in a mask and hoodie as ran toward the Washington County Fair Complex and Hillsboro Airport MAX Station. It's not clear if this was before the hijacking attempt, but it seems likely that it occurred afterwards as the suspect was fleeing the gunfight he started.

No details have been released on the man's motivation for wanting to hijack a helicopter.

One witness described the man walking in with a hoodie and pulling a mask up.
