Detention Officer Shot In Head By Teen Stepdaughter While Sleeping
Spalding County, GA – An off-duty Spalding County detention officer was shot in the head by her 16-year-old stepdaughter on Wednesday.
Authorities said 34-year-old Spalding County Detention Officer Amanda Moore was shot at about 3:30 p.m. on June 12 in her home in the 1200-block of Etheridge Mill Road, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Another child was in the house when the 16 year old opened fire.
That child ran from the home to a neighbor’s house for help, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Spalding County Sheriff Darrell Dix said that he spotted the stepdaughter walking away from the house when he arrived on the scene.
Sheriff Dix said he pulled up next to the girl and then arrested her, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported.
“She didn’t say anything,” he said. “She didn’t fight. It was literally nothing. It was just blank.”
The sheriff said that the detention officer was sleeping when the teen shot her behind the ear.
"It was pretty coldblooded. And calculated," Dix told 11Alive.
Detention Officer Moore’s father is a sergeant for the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office and he was one of the first to arrive on the scene of his daughter’s shooting, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Sheriff Dix said Sergeant Larry Martin had no idea he was responding to his own daughter’s shooting until he pulled up at the house.
The sheriff said that when the father arrived, he stopped him from going inside the house to see his daughter.
“It’s a totally different angle,” Sheriff Dix explained.
Deputies found Detention Officer Moore with a single gunshot wound to her head, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Spalding County Sheriff’s Captain Dwayne Jones said the detention officer was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center where she remained in stable condition on Thursday.
Detention Officer Moore has been with the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office for about a year, according to the sheriff.
Sheriff Dix said that preliminary investigation showed that Detention Officer Moore was fighting with her 16-year-old stepdaughter before the teen shot her, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported.
The teenage girl was arrested and the sheriff said investigators wanted her charged as an adult for the shooting.
“This is a difficult time for everyone involved and we are asking for prayers of healing and strength for this family in the coming days,” Sheriff Dix said.
