Delivery Driver Paralyzed After Being Shot For Parking In Handicap Spot

A 65-year-old man shot a delivery truck driver who parked in a handicap spot after the two had scuffled

St. Charles, MO – A 65-year-old man who had a disabled placard on his car shot a 21-year-old Amazon delivery truck driver parked in a handicapped spot.

The incident happened at about noon Tuesday and the 21-year-old victim is in critical but stable condition and the 65-year-old man was arrested at the scene, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The dispute began when the Amazon driver illegally parked his delivery van in a handicap spot.

The 21-year-old driver was talking to another Amazon driver at the time, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

The 65-year-old man confronted both drivers about being parked in a handicap spot, according to St. Charles Police Lieutenant Tom Wilkison. Even though the 65-year-old man had a handicap parking placard, it was unclear whether he was handicapped, Lt. Wilkison said.

The older man pulled out a cell phone so he could record the illegally parked delivery van. Then the two began to struggle over the phone, Lt. Wilkison said.

During the argument, the two men were involved in a “hands-on” confrontation, according to police.

The 65-year-old man fell to the ground during the struggle. He then took out a handgun and shot the 21-year-old one time in the back while the younger man was walking away, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The gunman then went to a shoe store where he was arrested and police recovered a gun.

Amazon said in a statement that the 21-year-old driver didn’t work directly for Amazon but worked for a contracted company.

“This is a terrible incident and our thoughts are with the driver,” Amazon said in a statement, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “We will work with law enforcement and the delivery service partner as they investigate."

Police didn’t release the names of the victim or the suspect.

Altho shooting him was a bit over the top, hard to feel sorry for the jackass punk who was obviously not even working, rather chit chatting w/another non worker on the company dime. Too bad the older guy didn’t have a chance to shoot him while facing him. Could have used ‘self defense’.& probably gotten away with it. Hope he gets great representation.

This is a sore subject for a lot of people. I personally have seen non-handicapped people park in handicapped spots. In my area it is a constant problem because the law simply is not enforced. The only time it gets enforced is when a handicapped person raises hell over it but then it goes right back to the same old thing. However, on the flip side of the coin is people with handicapped stickers on the vehicle they are driving who are not handicapped but using a family members sticker though the handicapped person is not even with them. Like the above story, I have seen delivery driver using handicapped parking. Shooting someone over that is "WAY" over the top yet if the laws were enforced by a very stiff fine perhaps something like this would never have happened.

Cops don’t have time to deal with handicap parking violations, especially since half the people using placards arnt handicapped. They are way busy dealing with idiots who shoot people in the back for no reason. 🤦🏽‍♂️

Wè #1. And for people to agree the delivery driver should die or be paralysed, you people are just plain sick #2. And #3, if the last were enforced this wouldn't have happened in the first place. Man, are people mean-spirited and hateful a lot lately!

Handicapped parking is on private property. I believe the owner of the property would have to initiate an actual complaint with the police.

Probably a good idea if you don't arm yourself. You might end up being roomies with a 65 year old man. 😳

Or parked side by side Bool shipping

Not really. State and federal guidelines mandate the number and location of the spots and many large commercial areas have authorized enforcement of mv laws on the proprrty. Furezones and those parking areas specifically.

Most of the stop signs had no legal backing..in my jurisdiction in those areas.

This article has nothing to do with law enforcement; what is it even posted on the blue lives matter newsfeed?

I hate it when people illegally park in handicap spots and originally I was going to say nonetheless I wouldn’t shoot someone over it but now seeing the driver fought with a 65 year old mine you because he didn’t like the elderly man complaining he deserved to be shot!!!!!!!

While the old man(I am too) should not have used his weapon, why was the younger man even fighting with an elderly man to begin with. This whole thing should never have happened. What a horrific, needless tragedy.

Is this 65 year old person one of those so called "good guy with a gun"??? Um....sure...🤔

When the young man tries to get the phone away from the elderly gentleman - that's an assault, which probably scared the older man. However, the older man should NOT have shot the driver if the driver was walking away. He should have just gotten the license number of the delivery van and then called the police and pressed charges against the driver.

Moral of the story: Don't mess with old people or you may get shot! Old people have been through wars and been around a while and are not afraid and have much less to lose than a young 21 year-old disrespectful punk.

And that's why you shoot someone in the back? How about no matter how old you are you don't make police matters your business.

In FL it is a felony to assault anyone over 65 and shooting in self defense is legal.

Just because the older man was 65 doesn't mean he was a little white haired weakling, people. Lou Ferrigno (the original Hulk) is 67 and formidable. Dont pick fights over parking spots. If someone is illegally using a handicapped spot, inform the authorities, let them issue a citation. Now one man is paralyzed and the old man will do some time for shooting someone without justification.(The threat was over)

Hate to say it but the old guys life just got real complicated. You can't shoot people in the back walking away from you, nope!

First just move the van out of the handicap park. Second he was using a phone just like everyone else to record it. Third he should not have gotten into a scuffle over an phone. Fourth instead of scuffle he got out of the truck when he could have just moved it and let it go. Fifth the older guy should not have shot him in the back but first before all that police should have been called by both men. Last don't hit old guy's

Sounds to me like the 65 year old man was looking for trouble. There are people who do that. He probably didn't even need the spot, or there might have been other handicap spots. If you need the spot, call the police. He destroyed a young man's life.

Most 65 year olds are not feeble old men. I don't even understand that law.

“ The older man pulled out his phone to record the van parked illegally and then they started scuffling over the phone”? Sounds like the driver attacked him?

Well if you can go by the story as it's reported and that's a "BIG IF" The Amazon driver shouldn't have gotten "hands-on" with the senior over the seniors phone. That being said I can't see shooting the Amazon driver in the back as he walked away

A little to soon ! 🤣👍💯👍

Actions have consequences, not saying the seniors actions were justified, but the young man shouldn't have been physical with the old man either.

Both my wife and I are handicapped and wish for all the world that we could give back our dubious placards to walk among the fit and healthy once again, but alas, my wife especially needs the benefit these sanctioned spaces provide. One of my pet peeves is seeing hulking healthy young men and mincing entitled young ladies usurp these spots due to entitlementarian attitudes and just plain laziness and arrogance. Getting that out of the way, this shooting appears to me to be way out out of line and not in any way justified. Shame on those drivers, but woe unto the shooter. Everyone loses.
