Marrero, LA - The cowardly suspect, Sylvester Holt, who ambushed, shot, and killed hero Westwego Police Officer Michael Louviere and his former girlfriend, later shot himself after a long standoff on a bridge.
According to Fox News, the rampage began on Friday morning. Sylvester Holt went to his former girlfriend Simone Veal's house, after learning that she was eight weeks pregnant with her current boyfriend's baby. She was already outside preparing to leave when Holt arrived. Veal told her boyfriend to stay inside the residence and got in her 2010 Dodge Charger. Veal left and tried to get away from Holt, who began to chase her in the U-Haul truck that he was driving. He intentionally rammed her vehicle near a traffic light. Veal wrecked and hit another vehicle that was waiting at the stop light. Holt then walked up to her vehicle and shot her.
Officer Michael Louviere was on his way home from working his shift and stopped to help with what he thought was a simple traffic accident. As he began checking on the drivers that were involved, Holt executed Officer Louviere by shooting him in the back of the head. He then walked over to where Veal was lying and shot her again. Both Officer Louviere, Simone Veal, and her baby died. Holt then fled and a massive manhunt ensued.
According to The New Orleans Advocate, Sylvester Holt headed back to his former girlfriend's house. He abandoned the U-Haul, which was later found by Officers. 9mm ammunition was found inside the U-Haul. Holt called a cab and left the area. He told the taxi driver to stop at the bridge because he felt sick. Officers were then called to the Crescent City Connection bridge for a report of a possible jumped as Holt was hanging over the side of the bridge.
The very coward who assassinated a hero and as well has a pregnant woman began threatening to jump off the bridge. A stand-off began which lasted for hours as negotiators tried to talk Sylvester Holt down while the even unfolded on live TV. Holt finally shot himself in the chest around 5:30 PM on Friday. He was transported to University Hospital and died late Friday night. If he had survived, he would have faced charges of two counts of First Degree Murder and one count of Feticide, in addition to Damage to Property.
Sylvester Holt was no stranger to the criminal justice system. In September 2016, he was charged with First Degree Rape and placed under $500,000 bond. He was also a fugitive from another jurisdiction and no bond was allowed on that charge. On January 7, the rape charge was dismissed because the witness decided not to cooperate. Otherwise, Holt would have still been in custody. He had also been served with several protective orders by other women between 2012 and 2016.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, both blood and blue, of fallen hero Westwego Police Officer Michael Louviere, and the family of Simone Veal.
