Cops Tase Man, Causing Him To Fatally Impale Himself On Sword

Calvin Schwab fell on the large knife he was brandishing and died after police Tased him in the back.

Cadillac, MI – A man brandishing a large knife fell on his own sword and died after officers deployed a Taser at him.

Police responded to a “domestic incident” at a home in Marion at about 5 p.m. on Oct. 11, the Grand Rapids Press reported.

The caller told police her 29-year-old son – later identified as Calvin Schwab -had come to his parents’ home “brandishing two large knives,” WPBN reported.

Evart police responded to the call and were assisted by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Department, according to the Grand Rapids Press.

When the police officers arrived on the scene, they spotted the son on foot not far from the home.

Officers told the man to kneel on the ground and he followed their commands, the Grand Rapids Press reported.

But that was the end of his cooperation.

Schwab ignored officers’ orders to place his hands on his head, and instead reached into his waistband and pulled out a weapon that police believed was either a long knife or a short sword, according to the Grand Rapids Press.

One officer was standing in front of the suspect with his Taser drawn, and the second officer was standing behind him with his pistol drawn.

When Schwab pulled out the big knife, the officer behind him holstered his gun and pulled out his Taser.

He then deployed it at the suspect’s back, the Grand Rapids Press reported.

Michigan State Police (MSP) said that shock of the Taser caused the man to fall on his sword.

“This resulted in him falling forward and onto the knife in his hand, puncturing his chest cavity,” the state police said.

The officers called for an ambulance and immediately began first aid on the wounded suspect, but despite best efforts, he died at the scene, the Grand Rapids Press reported.

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave while an investigation is conducted per Evart city policy.

MSP’s investigation will be reviewed by the Osceola County Prosecutor’s Office, according to the Grand Rapids Press.

And I always thought that the old saying of "Fall on your sword" was just a sayin'. Who'd a thunk it was for real?

A few years ago I lived in Cadillac and worked in Evart for a couple of years. All I can say is, it's probably for the best. Darwin LIVES there.

It wasn’t a sword, it was a knife. Also the first initial call stated he had a gun which the person knew he did not have. Then the next call came through for a ambulance stating it was a self inflicted stab wound. There’s more to the story that hasn’t came to light, and may never. This was totally out of character for him, he wasn’t like this at all. Something set him off that day. He was a devoted father, 4 kids two of which were 11 months old when this happened, and another due this month. He did a lot of work for people in the community.
