A Maryland police officer was suspended after a video was released of an incoherent former NBA player in handcuffs

Oxon Hill, MD – A Maryland police officer has been suspended after recording a video of former National Basketball Association player Delonte West while he was shirtless and incoherent.

Prince George’s County Police said it learned on Tuesday that a police officer took the video and that it had been circulating on social media, the New York Post reported (video below).

Police said that on Tuesday they responded to a call regarding a fight near a casino. When the officers arrived, they saw a man bleeding from the face and then handcuffed West.

Both men involved knew each other and refused medical treatment, according to the New York Post.

In the video, West could be seen sitting shirtless on the curb with his hands cuffed behind him. Much of what West said in a profanity-laden rant is incoherent.

Once the department learned that their officer recorded the video, they launched an investigation and suspended the officer.

The Boston Globe reported that West, who made $16.2 million in salary over his nine-year career, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2008.

Former NBA player Jameer Nelson said on Twitter he was “sick” about what he saw in the video.

“To answer everybody that’s reaching out to me about this situation … all we can do is pray for Him and his family and hope that he seeks the proper help,” Nelson wrote on Twitter. “Mental illness is something that a lot of people deal with and don’t even know it, until sometimes it’s too late.”

West made headlines in 2011 when a rumor was reported that he had a sexual affair with LeBron James’ mother. West and James were teammates on the Cleveland Cavaliers.

West’s best year was 2006-07 when he was with the Boston Celtics. He played 69 games and averaged 12.2 points and 4.4 assists per game.

“Mental illness is something that a lot of people deal with..."

As is regularly proven by the trolls on this site.

Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa. Perhaps I am too dense to have grasped why the officer was suspended in this case. Was it the posting of the video? Did that violate dept. protocols?

He should be fired, not suspended...it’s never ok to use your body camera or cellphone to record people and then post it on social media...DUMB REAL DUMB...😳!

This is a tragic story of a mentally ill man who was recorded by a LEO and that video inappropriately shared on social media simply because he was famous in the sports world.
Something to understand about bi-polar disorder here is that it tends to have huge swings between highs and lows in men. Many sufferers self medicate in addition to prescriptions and it doesn't end well. Alcohol to lessen the manic times and opiates to improve the lows. It's a common and terrible disease of the mind.

LEO's are supposed to be more understanding than the average person with their mobile phone cameras and it is never right to record individuals they are arresting unless it's video evidence. He totally deserves the suspension and should be feeling very fortunate that he didn't lose his job over his actions.

Anyone besides me notice that all these trolls who are on this site constantly ALWAYS side with the pro sports player and condone their thug behavior. They hold them up as some form of hero's because they are talented at playing with balls and got paid a lot of money to do it. Sadly they wouldn't know a true hero if they got bitten on the ass.

There are two videos from this incident. The first video is taken by a private citizen, and shows Mr. West getting beat in the middle of a highway.

"As “troubling” as that video is, Stawinski said, a witness who spoke to police at the scene said the man on the ground hit the other person with a bottle. Essentially, the man seen being beaten was the aggressor, the witness told police."

When are LEOs gonna stop putting this stuff on social media? Haven’t they seen all the officers getting suspended and fired around the country on almost a daily basis? Just stop!

All of you who are having a hissy about this being put out to the public by a cop should get a LIFE. I DO NOT SEE THE PROBLEM. But, since all of you seem to think it is sacrilege, think about this - Jim is correct. This guy is OBVIOUSLY drug addled. He MAY also have some sort of mental illness, but drugs may have caused that. I have ZERO sympathy for this jerk...he attacked a guy with a bottle. So he's violent AND drug addled. You cops who think it is just fine to have put the cop on suspension should revisit every single thing you have done in the biz. Probably most of you were cops before social stuff, so maybe you didn't get suspended for things that you should have been. No one is perfect.

I completely agree with body cam evidence on the offender that should be entered into evidence only. Never never privately posted to social media.

What was wrong with the officer recording the transaction?

The officer should be fired. LEO's should be smart enough to know that they should never record anything with their cell phones while on duty and post it to social media. If it has to be recorded, use your body camera. The department will decide whether or not to release the footage.

He seems like such a nice guy. He had such a promising career as a rapper too.

At 2:44, he looks for the police. I suspect he wanted to buy them a free meal...

LOL. Not really,.

If anyone is caught carrying illegal drugs, they should be arrested and serve time in jail. No matter if they are a NFL player they should be fired from their job & serve time for the crimes they have committed.

It’s a police video, it’s public information anyhow.
