Community Outraged After Cop Asks Who Kobe Bryant Was On Social Media

A Monessen cop is facing accusations of racial insensitivity after people posted inappropriate comments under her post.

Monessen, PA – A Monessen police officer is under fire for writing a Facebook post asking who Kobe Bryant was on the day the famous basketball legend died in a helicopter crash.

“Who was Kobe Bryant?” the officer posted on Sunday, according to WPXI.

Bryant, a Los Angeles Lakers legend, and his 13-year-old daughter were killed in a helicopter crash outside Los Angeles on Jan. 26 with seven other people.

They were on their way to basketball practice at Mamba Academy, the basketball superstar’s sports training facility, when the helicopter owned by Bryant crashed into a hillside.

There was no indication in the officer’s post that it was anything other than a question, albeit an unusual one, WPIX reported.

But the comments that were posted beneath the query quickly raised eyebrows and the ire of the community.

WPIX reported that the comments were peppered with images of a fiery explosion and somebody posted an image police officers dancing.

Community members expressed outrage at the insensitivity of the comments but placed the blame on the officer who originally posted the question asking who Bryant was, not the people who posted the offensive comments.

Some in the community said they believed the post was "racially insensitive" and that they have lost trust in the officer who wrote it, WPXI reported.

Monessen Police Chief Jim Smith said that he was aware of the Facebook post but hasn’t taken any disciplinary action at this time.

Chief Smith also told WPXI that the police officer’s union has gotten involved in the incident.

Blue Lives Matter reached out to the Monessen Police Department, but nobody answered the phone.

Calls weren’t answered at Monessen City Hall, either, and the mayor’s office phone extension went directly to a voicemail box that was full.

WPXI reported that they had gone to Monessen Mayor Matt Shorraw’s office and home, called his cell phone multiples times, and even tried to contact the officer at home but they didn't get a response.

Oh, good, grief. A female officer who doesn't follow sports. How in the world did she ever get hired to enforce the law and support public safety? [sarcasm] I'd venture to say there are a lot of Americans who didn't know who he was. In any case, it isn't justification to fire her.

I had to ask the same question. I don’t follow professional sports. It has nothing to do with racism. It has to do with the fact that I disagree with paying full grown adults millions to play with balls.

I don't follow sports and could have said the same thing, do you know who Kenny Hart is?

I had heard the name, but I do not follow any pro sports at all. But if you would have ask me who he was, I could not have told you with 100% certainty what sport he played. I did say a prayer for the crash victims, in which there were more than just the Bryants. So blast me if you will, I am a senior citizen that does not follow sports.

Lots of people have never heard of my hero Rube Goldberg but I don't get outraged about it. Ok, maybe I'm a little disappointed.

I bet if you asked half the people bitching they couldn’t tell you who our current Vice President is or even who obama’s vice was or what the 3 branches of government are or who won the Revolutionary War but they know real important stuff like every player’s stats and their friggin shoe size.

Not everyone follows basketball, football or baseball. I may know 5 or 6 basketball names.....only because of media coverage. I know a handfull of football players. I follow baseball and recognize 100's of them. "She" probably doesn't know! Now she's being slammed for asking? People are to quick to judge anymore!

People look for a reason to be offended in everything. This lady officer just happened to wonder who Kobe was...Honestly, I only know who he is based on the fact that my son was a huge fan...
Get a grip people, it's not like the world economy is going to come to a standstill...

My wife doesn't follow sports. Doesn't like sports. In almost 37 years of marriage, I think at best she's tolerated me watching sports. When I told her the Kobe died, she had to ask me who he was.

Damn! I understand to some, he was an icon but there are a lot of people who don't follow sports at all so would have no idea who he was. She was just asking a question. Get over yourselves you triggered knuckleheads!!

FUK THE COMMUNITY. FUK the sno flaykes. They should keep their noses up their own arse.
I side with the officer.
I have attended ONE NBA game in 66 yrs. and it was BORING.
I Stopped watching Basket ball when Larry Bird was JUST starting with the Boston Celtics.
I new the name of this Magnificent Soul Kobe Bryant.
I did NOT know Mr. Bryant was Retired.
So that tells you how little i know about Basket Ball.
SO SCREW EVERYONE who has a problem with the Officer. His Responsibility is to HIS Family and HIS Employer / Community.
And finally : as i watched the stories of Mr. Bryant , his family and the lives he touched ....i sobbed like a mental case.
The N.T.S.B. investigator said the Sikorsky was not equipped with a Terrain Avoidance Warning system . 😢

Ya know...I do not follow professional sports...no interest. I DID recognize the name Kobe Bryant, but that was the extent of the recognition. I do pray for the souls of him and his daughter and the other seven who perish in the accident. If she did not know
the player, not reason to be fired...BUT..if you have time to write it on Facebook, you have time to at least look it up on the internet. I do agree it would be devastating to those close to the deceased if they read the query, but don't think the rest of the world has to get in an upraor about it. So she as lazy and wanted another to do her "research work." That is not reason for termination....or castration by the public.

Sounds like the Liberal cop hating public will jump at any opportunity to accuse an LEO for anything they can blow up out of proportion.

These are fools and idiots who don’t know anything about our life or the risks we take daily to protect the lives of others.

They don’t deserve this protection but we give it anyway. But give a cop a break for not knowing who Colby Bryant is??? As a dog returns to his vomit so a fool is always a fool.

So she didn’t know who he was, big deal! Others make the inappropriate comments yet she’s racially insensitive? People, please, get over yourselves, get a life, and quit trying to pander to all this PC crap where none exists, or lighting a fire under water soaked kindling.

Now if it was Michael Jordan, I could probably see it.

Growing up we didn't play round ball(aka basketball) We played stick ball.
There were some legendary players that could hit 3 manholes (Distance between manholes is about 304 feet) No one remembers their names, or the game of stickball. I don't get all butt hurt about it.

The only thing I know about Bryant is that he got away with raping a 19 year old girl. Ironically, he would still be alive today if he was in the prison cell where he belonged.

Racial insensitivity? Absurd. I didn't know who he was either -- was familiar with the name -- but I am not interested in sports. I am very sorry for his family, as well as those of slain officers and soldiers, who barely get a mention.

Every time I open the news. There's 5 to 10 different stories about Kobe Bryant. I'm sorry that he died but there were 9 other people that died also, but there's never any story about them or the other thousands of people that died on the same day.

Why haven’t we heard more about the others killed in the crash. Wasn’t their lives worth just as much?
So sick of people worshipping these ball players. EVERY LIFE MATTERS. Everyone from this crash matters NOT JUST THE FEW!

I'm not a sport fan and I don't understand why people treat other people that plays a game like they were gods, they are human and no better than anyone else. This treatment this young police officer is getting because she didn't know who koby was is an outrage. I'm sorry for his family but I haven't heard one name of the other seven victims and their lives were just as important. If this officer get in trouble over something this innocent then your police system is broken. This shouldn't even be an issue. This country is in serious trouble.

Over the last 10 days 7 Police Officers and 2 Military personnel have been killed, barely a blip on the news. A NAPA who plays monkey dunk dies and it's on the news for 6 days. Something is very wrong here, but what else can you expect with the libtard news?
