New York, NY – The former chair of Duke University’s Psychiatry Department said that President Donald Trump’s time in office may cause more deaths than Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, or Mao Zedong (video below).
Dr. Allen Frances made the proclamation Sunday morning on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” show and host Brian Stelter didn’t even make an attempt to argue with him or question his data, according to the Washington Examiner.
Stelter opened his show on Aug. 25 by asking if President Trump suffered from mental illness and ended his monologue by saying “we can’t tiptoe around it anymore,” the Daily Beast reported.
The host went on to discuss the merits of having psychiatrists hypothesize mental health diagnoses of President Trump with Frances and Dr. Bandy X. Lee.
Lee is the Yale psychiatrist who briefed members of Congress in January of 2018 and said the President has exhibited dangerous signs that required intervention by medical professionals, CNN reported at the time.
The 37,000-member American Psychiatric Association (APA) has banned psychiatrists from diagnosing patients that they haven’t examined.
The APA said in a blog post that "member psychiatrists should not give professional opinions about the mental state of someone they have not personally evaluated," CNN reported.
This is known as the “Goldwater Rule” which was created in 1973 in the wake of numerous psychiatrists making arbitrary but harshly negative assessments of Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, whom none of those commenting had ever met, according to the APA website.
The former Duke Psychiatry chairman told CNN that he was opposed to doctors breaking the Goldwater Rule because calling President Trump mentally ill was an insult to the mentally ill population.
“Well, I think 'medicalizing' politics has three very dire consequences,” Frances said. “The first is that it stigmatizes the mentally ill. I’ve known thousands of patients, almost all of them are well-behaved, well-mannered good people. Trump is none of these. Lumping that is a terrible insult to the mentally ill and they have enough problems and stigma as it is."
"Second, calling Trump crazy hides the fact that we’re crazy for having elected him and even crazier for allowing his crazy policies to persist," the doctor continued. "Trump is as destructive a person in this century as Hitler, Stalin, Mao in the last century. He may be responsible for many more million deaths than they were."
Mao was the chairman of the Communist Party of China from 1943 until his death in 1976, and is credited with having killed as many as 45 million people under his policies of the “Great Leap Forward,” the Washington Examiner reported.
Stalin killed almost 20 million in labor camps while he led the Soviet Union.
And 11 million people were killed by Hitler and the Nazis during the Holocaust, the Washington Examiner reported.
CNN’s Stelter made no attempt to question Frances’ claims or fact check the doctor’s prediction.
Numerous entities called out CNN, and the show’s host specifically, for their handling of the segment.
Stelter later posted on Twitter that he was having technical difficulties while they were filming the segment and he wasn’t able to hear what Frances as saying.
Frances also took to Twitter to clarify his own remarks and said that he meant President Trump was going to kill many more people with global warming.
