Chicago PD Releases Video Which Shows 'Unarmed Black Man' Draw Gun On Cops

Chicago PD has released the bodycam footage showing the shooting of Harith Augustus.

Chicago, IL - Chicago PD has released bodycam video on Sunday of the fatal officer-involved shooting of Harith Augustus (below.)

The shooting happened in the area of 71st St and Chappel Ave at around 5:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Chicago PD Chief of Patrol Fred Waller said Saturday that officers were working foot patrol when they spotted Augustus, who appeared to be carrying a firearm.

The officers confronted the suspect, who then became combative. As the suspect fought with officers, he flailed away from them.

The newly-released video clearly shows that Augustus had a pistol and magazines holstered on his belt.

As Augustus broke free from officers, video shows him drawing his gun as an officer responds by fatally shooting him.

Officers recovered the semi-automatic pistol and loaded magazines from the suspect.

Superintendent Eddie Johnson announced Sunday that Augustus had a Firearm Owners Identification card, but not a concealed carry permit.

Supt. Johnson added that the officer who fatally shot Augustus is a male officer, contradicting "witness" reports of a white female officer being the shooter.

Almost immediately following the shooting on Saturday, a large crowd of protesters formed and started threatening to shoot the police.

The crowd spread the story about how a barber named "Snoop" was unarmed and shot in the back as he was walking home from work.

The crowd also created a second narrative where people claimed that Snoop was armed, but they said he had a concealed carry permit.

The crowd started jumping on police cars and clashing with officers.

Many in the crowd threatened police officers, saying that they better not be around come nighttime.

At around sunset, people in the crowd started to throw glass bottles, rocks, and bottles of urine at officers. Chief Waller said three to four officers were injured in the attacks.

Officers responded by ordering the protesters back and taking down troublemakers and people who refused to listen.

One person was arrested and charged with three felonies, and three more were detained and released.

You can see multiple videos from Chicago Sun-Times reported Nader Issa below:

As of the time of this writing, another protest is still scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday, despite video showing Augustus being killed while trying to murder police officers.

You can see the bodycam video of the shooting below:

@Mrs10 I'm holding off on your question because I don't think @pinkejon gets to get off that easily with a subject change.

@pinkejon, you keep mentioning guns are the main cause of police deaths, and you're relating it to this story. However, the average cop killer doesn't look like anyone in this story. the average cop killer, especially for the last handful of years, is a white man in his 30s. If you'd like to see the data, let me know and I'll post it.

Given that the average cop killer isn't urban (white people language for "black"), how did Obama and BLM or any other group you mentioned persuade white men to kill more cops with guns?

I'll also remind everyone reading this that cop deaths due to violence overall are lower and have been dropping for decades. @pinkejon has said that cop gun death is on the rise, something I haven't verified for myself yet.

@Hi_estComnDenomn (who said that my argument about presidential responsibility as re police deaths was surprisingly emotional and lacked logic/reason)

I will concede that I was long on emotion and short on the strictly logic-based analysis I use as a default. The reason? Every night I watch as my husband straps on gun, Taser, handcuffs, baton, bullet-resistant (no vest is bullet "proof"), and badge to leave out our safe home and patrol the unsafe streets. So it's definitely emotional to speak of line-of-duty murders. And I use the word murder purposefully. Line-of-duty deaths are tragic but those are unfortunately reality (car wrecks, accidental, heat/cold related, etc) Iive with.

@Hi_estComnDenomn I'm replying for myself and @pinkejon (feel free to also add your thoughts Pinkejon!) The discussion was that PJ gave stats about police line of duty deaths and your reply was about gun control. There are so many comments here so context was needed. My response:

Since the guns used to kill these officers were already illegally obtained, how could stricter gun laws (which would only affect law-ABIDING citizens) make a difference?

There are some individuals who simply want to protect themselves as they live in some of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the US. If they are good people of good character, I sympathize with their situation. However, if carrying illegally, they should not resist arrest or try to draw on police...that is just asking for a shootout. The real problem is the community that spreads false rumors and demonizes the police. That affects an entire community, and not just individuals.

@pinkejon it sounds like your solution would be stricter gun control then. correct me if i'm wrong.

and since we're on the subject of presidents promoting racism, i'll use your logic. after endorsing a number of white nationalists running for office, you should also assert that Trump is an open-door racist, correct?

while numbers have maintained in the 110-120s roughly, murders by firearm have taken over as the main cause of police deaths for the last 3 years running. Please explain that. Its very simple, the media narrative has pushed that cops are racist and if you are a minority confronted by the cops you will be shot. This is a patent falsehood. It was perpetuated by President Obama and his cabinet. He openly showed Law Enforcement disdain by inviting BLM leadership to the White House. This is the equivalent of inviting a racist group like the Klan, The New Panthers, or White Nationalists into the White House and gives them the appearance of White House backing or support. When you have an administration that consistently makes statements about racial bias in Law Enforcement, you start an inflammatory response. Especially when there are no credible facts showing racial bias in Law Enforcement. Just a few mentioned in a LA Times article.

While Line of Duty deaths have stabilized some, since 2016, LODD's by firearm have increased. Prior to 2016 the major cause of LODD was automobile deaths. For the 3rd year straight the leading cause of death among LEO's is murder by a firearm. This says a lot about the societal attitude that was pushed by the Previous Administration as well as the media and groups like BLM. TI wont consider LODD deaths "decreasing" until we get BELOW 100 and we have fewer firearm murders of LEO's that any other category. he media has pushed the false narrative of institutional racism as has BLM. When they push a story and they turn out wrong, they rarely follow up with an apology. Not that it matters because the harm has already been done. They should be held accountable for false stories or putting lies out there as facts.

Police deaths declined due to the use of body armor, better tactics and officer survival training and trauma medicine. Despite population increases since the 1960's, the numbers of people shot by law enforcement has remained relatively constant or declined. What has increased is the felonious deaths versus accidental deaths. While the numbers are small, the felonious assaults are increasing. This guy knew he had a gun. He only had to comply. It is stupidity to reach for a gun when you know what the police reaction is going to be.
