Chicago PD Releases Video Which Shows 'Unarmed Black Man' Draw Gun On Cops

Chicago PD has released the bodycam footage showing the shooting of Harith Augustus.

Chicago, IL - Chicago PD has released bodycam video on Sunday of the fatal officer-involved shooting of Harith Augustus (below.)

The shooting happened in the area of 71st St and Chappel Ave at around 5:30 p.m. Saturday night.

Chicago PD Chief of Patrol Fred Waller said Saturday that officers were working foot patrol when they spotted Augustus, who appeared to be carrying a firearm.

The officers confronted the suspect, who then became combative. As the suspect fought with officers, he flailed away from them.

The newly-released video clearly shows that Augustus had a pistol and magazines holstered on his belt.

As Augustus broke free from officers, video shows him drawing his gun as an officer responds by fatally shooting him.

Officers recovered the semi-automatic pistol and loaded magazines from the suspect.

Superintendent Eddie Johnson announced Sunday that Augustus had a Firearm Owners Identification card, but not a concealed carry permit.

Supt. Johnson added that the officer who fatally shot Augustus is a male officer, contradicting "witness" reports of a white female officer being the shooter.

Almost immediately following the shooting on Saturday, a large crowd of protesters formed and started threatening to shoot the police.

The crowd spread the story about how a barber named "Snoop" was unarmed and shot in the back as he was walking home from work.

The crowd also created a second narrative where people claimed that Snoop was armed, but they said he had a concealed carry permit.

The crowd started jumping on police cars and clashing with officers.

Many in the crowd threatened police officers, saying that they better not be around come nighttime.

At around sunset, people in the crowd started to throw glass bottles, rocks, and bottles of urine at officers. Chief Waller said three to four officers were injured in the attacks.

Officers responded by ordering the protesters back and taking down troublemakers and people who refused to listen.

One person was arrested and charged with three felonies, and three more were detained and released.

As of the time of this writing, another protest is still scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday, despite video showing Augustus being killed while trying to murder police officers.

Police deaths declined due to the use of body armor, better tactics and officer survival training and trauma medicine. Despite population increases since the 1960's, the numbers of people shot by law enforcement has remained relatively constant or declined. What has increased is the felonious deaths versus accidental deaths. While the numbers are small, the felonious assaults are increasing. This guy knew he had a gun. He only had to comply. It is stupidity to reach for a gun when you know what the police reaction is going to be.

@Mrs10 Bullshit and you know it. Police death has declined for decades. By your logic, President Carter is responsible for reduced police death today since the decline started after his term.

Surprising coming from you that you'd make such an emotional statement based on absolutely no fact or logic.

@Rational human being - I know it's easier to work off of emotions rather than actual facts and laws so let me help edumacate you. Here is the law that allowed the Chicago police to stop and legally detain Augustus. "Terry v. Ohio, 392 U.S. 1, was a decision by the United States Supreme Court which held that the Fourth Amendment prohibition on unreasonable searches and seizures is not violated when a police officer stops a suspect on the street and frisks him or her without probable cause to arrest, if the police officer has a reasonable suspicion that the person has committed, is committing, or is about to commit a crime and has a reasonable belief that the person "may be armed and presently dangerous."

I also find it ironic you would accuse the commenters on this site of being racist while you write "Meanwhile, I'm gonna go let your daughter chokes herself on this dick, understand that all of your racist fucks are well on your our way out. " Stay classy my friend.

Rational human beings, please go back and carefully read the article. It clearly states in paragraph 3 that the officers who tried to stop him "were walking foot patrol and observed him to be carrying a gun. Considering Chicago has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation it's common sense that they would stop him.

You complain about someone referring to the protesters as "these blacks" and state " y'all need to go join the Nazi parades, you're well on your way anyway." Your no better then the person who made the generality about blacks. What gives you the right to ASSume that LEO's are Nazi's for enforcing the laws that the City of Chicago enacted?

Your observations about the video are complete fantasy. He was given a lawful order from a police officer and he CHOSE to not follow it. Why did he choose not to follow the order? Because he was carrying the gun in VIOLATION of the law. Plain and simple if he had followed the law and obeyed the directions of the officers he would be alive today. It was his CHOICE to run away and pull his gun and he lost his life for it. Why is it so hard for certain people to just follow the direction of police officers?

Your constant reference to LEO's as Nazi's is revolting. May I suggest you do a little studying on who and what Nazi's really were. Not what people with an agenda claim they are but who they really were and what they did. Also your refusal to look at black on black crime and acknowledge it is a major problem in Chicago shows your own personal ignorance.

Lastly he wasn't being arrested at the time this happened he was being stopped for questioning. The crime, carrying a concealed weapon. Officers have the lawful right to stop someone and verify that the are legally allowed to conceal carry. He wasn't!

Do yourself and everyone in your community a favor and get educated. Stop spewing the typical ignorant garbage and do something to better your community.

So, how about all those morons that rioted and blamed the Officer for the shooting of that thug? Makes me wonder if that clown calling himself a reporter was actually just stirring feces to try and get better headlines. All his reporting was wrong and did nothing but anger people who have no clue and nothing better to do than hang around and blame police for their worthless lives. You reach for a firearm, carrying legally or illegally and try to draw it while physically resisting arrest by officers, you deserve a few extra holes in you. You made the choice not the officers.
