Chicago, IL – A young mother was murdered while shielding her one-year-old daughter from gunfire outside her home on Tuesday morning.
The fatal attack occurred at approximately 8:50 a.m., as 24-year-old Brittany Hill was chatting with acquaintances in the 1200-block of North Mason Avenue, WFLD reported.
Chicago police said that Hill had just gotten out of a vehicle and was holding her one-year-old daughter when an unidentified gunman opened fire from a silver Chevrolet Impala, according to the Chicago Tribune.
There were two individuals in the suspect vehicle at the time of shooting, the Chicago Sun Times reported.
At least one of the bullets ripped into the young mother’s upper torso, but she was able to take cover behind a car parked nearby, according to WFLD.
“She moved towards the rear of a parked vehicle and fell to the ground and laid over her child to shield her,” Chicago Police Department (CPD) Office of Communications Officer Michelle Tannehill said.
“She shielded the baby from the gunfire," Officer Tannehill told the Chicago Tribune.
Hill’s young son was also with her at the time of the shooting, but he ran away when the gunfire broke out.
The father of Hill’s daughter was inside the vehicle she’d just stepped out of, WMAQ reported.
Neighbors rushed to her aid, and transported her to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Hill was pronounced dead at approximately 9:25 a.m.
Her uninjured children are now in the care of other family members.
The little girl’s father was also uninjured.
“She is a hero,” said anti-police activist Ja’Mal Green, who has known Hill since they went to high school together. “She loved her kids…She made sure her daughter was safe.”
Investigators said they do not believe Hill was the intended target, but noted that three people standing near her likely were.
"This is not a random act of violence, unfortunately," Officer Tannehill explained. "It could possibly have been a targeted incident due to gang conflicts and retaliations in the area."
No arrests have been made.
CPD officers have recovered the gunman’s vehicle, and said they are reviewing surveillance footage from the area.
