Protesters Demand Justice For Teen Who Shot Himself While Running From Cops

The Chicago medical examiner ruled the death of Steven Rosenthal a suicide after he ran from police and shot himself.

Chicago, IL - More than 100 protesters rushed the doors of Mount Sinai Hospital emergency room on Sunday demanding to see the dead body of 15-year-old Steven Rosenthal.

The Chicago Tribune reported that protesters yelled Let us see Steve! and chanted No justice, no peace! as they scuffled with hospital security that was blocking the doorway.

But Rosenthals body wasnt even at the hospital.

He had been transported to the medical examiners office after he was pronounced dead on Friday, police said.

The shooting occurred just after 7 p.m. on Aug. 17 after officers spotted Rosenthal with a weapon and tried to question him, FOX News reported.

Police said Rosenthal ran from the officers and then shot himself in the head shortly thereafter, the Chicago Tribune reported. He died at his home in the 1500-block of South Keeler Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood.

The medical examiner ruled Rosenthals death a suicide from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Chicago Tribune.

But the teens family doesnt believe them and said they had witnesses who claimed to have seen officers kill him.

Steven was on the stairwell of his grandmothers house on the West Side of Chicago when police officers stormed up the stairwell chasing, Andrew Stroth, an attorney for Rosenthals family, said during a press conference that preceded the protest. Within moments, these officers, without cause or provocation, shot and killed 15-year old Steven. Based on several eyewitness accounts, these officers ended the hopes and the dreams of a talented young man with a bright future.

However, ballistics and body camera footage show that none of the officers fired their weapons, and physical evidence showed that Rosenthal shot himself, according to CBS News.

Rosenthals aunt, Terinica Thomas-Level, called out Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel during the press conference, and demanded the release of the officers bodycam footage from the incident.

My 15-year old nephew Steven was shot and killed by the Chicago Police Department, Thomas-Level claimed. I need the attention of Mayor Emanuel. I need to see evidence. Bodycams. They need to release the video. My nephew would never commit suicide ever.

If he [Emanuel] even had the smallest compassion for our family, hed get those videotapes released, she said.

The medical examiner has not released Stevens body, the familys attorney said. The family is demanding to see the body, the family is demanding to see the evidence, the family is demanding to see the supposed, alleged weapon that was on the scene. The family deserves justice, and thats what the family is fighting for.

But Chicago Police Spokesman Michael Carroll told the Chicago Tribune that the police department has not come to a point where the decision has been made to release the bodycam video.

Carroll said the shooting was still under investigation, and that he was not aware of any formal complaints alleging police misconduct having been made by Rosenthals family.

I can't help myself, it has to be said. "I wonder if stricter firearm laws would have prevented this?"

(This is sarcasm pointed directly at the resident troll, don't get upset)

Holy cow! Dont you people understand?!? It is all the police fault because you tried to stop this pos! If you hadnt then he would not have shot himself! Just give the family their millions and move along. Hey it is the black community and if BLM cared they would be trying to stop the crime and guns in Chicago but they dont care! Just like the Democratics that run that shithole of a city.

no more "ambulance chasers" as attorney used to be called, now it's "thug lottery" chasers, can't wait to see their ads on media showing how much they've earned for their poor clients, how good they are at what they do, how many yrs, they've been doing it, etc. If there are 100's of protesters for this, where are out 100's of people to support our LEOs? Are we all afraid, i know it's chicago, but surely there are some LEO supporters out there to help the LEOs not get railroaded. GET OFF YOUR ASSES and help the LEOs you purport to support, or even stay on your asses and contact the mayor, police chief, however, just do something.

Condolences? My sympathy to his family would be a footnote at the bottom of the lawsuit against them and their lawyer for damages in trying to tarnish my reputation.

We see this all the time...The "community" rallying support for criminals including those that commit robberies, drug dealers, and possess guns illegally who die when involved in a confrontation with law enforcement! The issues will not be resolved until the community supports law enforcement even when it gets hard! It is sad when a young person dies but when they create the confrontation they own it!

Ridiculous, this mope could have shot himself in front of those people and they still would "demand justice"...

We have reached the point in our history where the police should begin filing charges against these "witnesses, spokesperson and scum lawyers" who make these false statement. The should be charged for inciting rioting and making false statements. They are just looking for a reason to cause rioting.

I would like to see people have legal recourse against lawyers who make unsubstantiated and inflammatory statements which create or increase civil unrest and put officers lives in danger.

If he had killed another teenager, they would be screaming for the police to do something.

It is Chicago, did anyone really expect less? Those poor cops in Chicago should all just quit and let the city destroy itself. It wouldn't take very long.

The insanity continues. The only constant is that the black community continue to blame everyone but themselves. Why would the police officers put their lives on the line for the likes of these people?

It would be interesting to learn how this family made contact with the "lawyer", or was it the other way around? They get a huge chunk of the settlement, if there is one. These Shysters know how to manipulate a jury, so it would be easy to manipulate a grieving family. Pump up the drama, publicity and protests to prep for a larger settlement. Cities should fight these frivolous lawsuits and counter sue. We would start seeing less and less of them. Maybe this extended family (no mention of parents?) were trying to raise this kid right and thought they were. Maybe the kid realized he was about to be exposed for being a thug and shot himself because he knew he had let them down. It is a sad situation, and would be much easier to offer sincere condolences to the family, but for the fact that police are again being portrayed as the villians. I place a lot of blame on these Shyster Lawyers who are less interested in "justice" than they are in getting a payday. They aren't necessarily good lawyers, but they are good actors at drama.
