Chicago Doubled The Number Of Labor Day Weekend Shooting Victims This Year

Eight people were murdered and at least 35 more were wounded in shootings throughout the city over Labor Day weekend.

Chicago, IL – Eight people were murdered and at least 35 more were wounded in shootings throughout the city over Labor Day weekend.

The first fatal shooting occurred at approximately 12:22 a.m. on Saturday in the 8700-block of South Burley Avenue, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

Police responded to the area after receiving a ShotSpotter alert, and found 42-year-old Willie Coker suffering from gunshot wounds to the chest.

The unresponsive victim was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses at the scene were uncooperative with police, WMAQ reported.

Approximately four hours later, a gunman opened fire from a vehicle in the 3200-block of West Le Moyne Street, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Eighteen-year-old Angel Perez was hit in the chest by at least one of the bullets, and was later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.

An unnamed 23-year-old man he was with suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks, and was transported to Norwegian American Hospital in serious condition.

The gunman has not been apprehended, according to WMAQ.

A third shooting occurred at approximately 5:51 p.m., as a group of people were sitting on the front porch of a residence in the 7100-block of South Paulina Street, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

A suspect in a dark-colored vehicle opened fire on the crowd, hitting five people.

A 26-year-old man was transported to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to the chest, and was later pronounced dead.

A 32-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to the thigh and chest, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

He was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was also pronounced dead.

The gunman fled the scene, and remains on the loose.

On Sunday at approximately 2:19 a.m., police responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 5100-block of West Washington Boulevard, and discovered that a 15-year-old boy had been shot in the back and leg.

The teen, identified as Dovantae Jackson, died at the scene.

Not even 30 minutes later, someone opened fire at a house party in the 6100-block of South St. Lawrence Avenue, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

The victim, a 27-year-old man, was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was later pronounced dead.

A 34-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to her foot during the same incident, according to police.

She drove herself to St. Bernard Hospital, and is listed in good condition.

At approximately 3:54 a.m., two men traveling in a vehicle were shot by someone who passed by them in another vehicle, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

Christopher Smith, 37, was shot multiple times throughout his body, and died at the scene.

The second victim, a 38-year-old man, drove himself to Mount Sinai Hospital with gunshot wounds to his hand, abdomen, and chest, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

He has been listed in serious condition.

The last fatal shooting of the holiday weekend occurred in the 8500-block of South Aberdeen Street just before 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday.

Police responded to the ShotSpotter alert, and discovered an unresponsive 32-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

At least 29 more people were wounded by gunfire between 5 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Tuesday, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

The number of fatal shootings over the holiday weekend doubled those that Chicago experienced during Labor Day weekend 2018.

Last year, four people were killed in shootings, and another 23 people were wounded, FOX News reported.

The Chicago Police Department (CPD) had an extra 1,000 officers on the street over the long weekend, which was down from the extra 1,400 officers the department had out on patrol a year ago, USA Today reported.
