CBP Truck Causes People To Flee Fearing ICE Raid But They Just Stopped For Lunch

The principal of Castle Bridge School stormed into a restaurant and demanded officers move parked police vehicles.

New York, NY – Parents, school administrators, and some community members in Washington Heights went into a panic on Thursday when a U.S. Customs and Border Protection K9 officer parked his marked vehicle on the sidewalk in front of a public school while he went to lunch.

A second officer from the same department parked his marked police vehicle on a street adjacent to the Castle Bridge School, and the two federal officers went into Coogan’s restaurant across the street for lunch, the New York Daily News reported.

People who saw the two police vehicles mistook them as belonging to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and flipped out.

Juan Martinez, from Mexico, fled his candy stall on the corner at the sight of the officers because he thought it was an ICE raid, the New York Daily News reported.

"I didn't know what they were doing," Martinez said. "School was getting out and everyone was scared."

He said that another illegal immigrant who was working on the block also ran when the officers stopped their vehicles.

A nervous parent alerted the school’s administrators to the vehicles, and Castle Bridge School Principal Julie Zuckerman tracked the officers down at lunch at Coogan’s, where they were eating a burger and chicken pot pie, the New York Daily News reported.

Zuckerman stormed into the restaurant and told the officers to move their vehicles.

"I told them to move their truck because it could be seen as threatening," she said. "They have to go looking for parking like everybody else. Don't play on my stoop."

Zuckerman’s school is two-thirds Hispanic, and 30 percent of the students are still learning to speak English, the New York Daily News reported. It’s located in a predominantly Dominican neighborhood.

The officers pushed back, said they were having lunch, and asked the principal if she would ask New York Police Department officers to move.

"It's outrageous, clearly, and an abuse of power," the principal said, offended the officers had taken a lunch break in the community where her school is located.

The host of Coogan’s restaurant expressed displeasure that the law enforcement officers had chosen to eat in a spot favored by Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda, the New York Daily News reported.

"The bastards had lunch here," Quincy Lopez said. "ICE is another word for gestapo."

Blue Lives Matter reached out to Coogan’s restaurant’s management to find out if Lopez’s attitude was reflective of the establishment’s attitude toward law enforcement, but the restaurant did not respond to the request for comment.

The New York Daily News reported that many immigrant families who were picking their children up from the Castle Bridge School were frightened by the sight of federal law enforcement vehicles.

"It's shocking," said Dionicio Rodriguez, who was picking up his 6-year-old daughter. "If you're an immigrant, you're going to be scared."

Washington Heights City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez heard about the incident and took to social media to express his outrage, according to the New York Daily News.

Rodriguez’s first tweet incorrectly identified the officers as ICE agents, and then he went after the wrong agency.

"This is totally unacceptable. They should be out. Abolish ICE," he tweeted.

New York City Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza posted angry tweets in both English and Spanish after he heard about the incident, the New York Daily News reported.

"@NYCSchools are safe havens. This had nothing to do with our school, but we understand the impact it can have on our families," Carranza wrote. "We're working with @NYCImmigrants to keep this from happening again."

The New York Daily News reported that U.S. Customs and Border Protection had not responded to requests for comment.

I would have lunch there every day! I would even brown bag it (no pun intended) and just park there and eat, if they're that afraid they should go back

You Know, these people crack me up. They scream and yell about the evils of law enforcement day in and day out. But the minute something happens to them, they want to scream and yell that law enforcement isn’t doing enough to keep them safe.

The officers should have told the principle that if they have students and staff that have reason to fear an ICE raid, than they have more problems than fear of a raid.

The owner of that restaurant should watch how he represents our faithful civil servants enforcing our duly passed laws. If you don't like the law, get your political representatives to change it. Until then I would suggest you start checking all of your customers. Because from this moment forward a group I know will have at least 1 or 2 anonymous "customers" noting how many illegals there are and calling ICE

They should have politely told the high and mighty principle that pound sand, we'll eat lunch wherever we want. And unless they parked illegally they are allowed to park on the street just like anybody else. An if the immigrants they interviewed who said they were nervous are LEGAL, then they have nothing to be nervous about. And if they are illegal immigrants then they should be nervous because the are criminals and are committing a crime just by being in this country.

All I really got out of this is that all of the "concerned people" in this news story are absolute morons who can't tell the difference between USCBP and ICE despite the USCBP vehicle being clearly marked as such.

I also feel like they fail to realize that USCBP's main duties include regulating and facilitating international trade, collecting import duties, and enforcing U.S. regulations such as trade and customs. USCBP doesn't go after illegal immigrants, they just attempt to regulate those who immigrant legally. In short speak, USCBP's primary shtick is drug raids.

I think they should park there every day in mass for the next year. As for the shitbox restaurant they ate at I would park right in front and eat my sandwich from home.

Tough shit! They were there having a simple lunch! Like any other police official, if you've done nothing wrong you've nothing to fear! Matter of fact, see a cop, go hug one! I'm sure they could use one to let them know you're supporting them!

Hell if you are in illegal immigrant you should run. You are here illegally and should be arrested and deported.

If you are here legally then you have no worries. Dont break the law. If you are an illegal alien then you should be arrested and deported.

BUILD THAT WALL!!!! DEPORT THESE CODDLED LEACHES!!! So SICK of all this BS pandering to ILLEGALS & the BILLIONS annually they cost American taxpayers! Not to mention the unchecked health issues & diseases they’re bringing in, killing innocent Americans Citizens, breaking our laws & too many police looking the other way, over arresting them. Where I live, they drive w/o a license or knowing our language, so can’t read signs or understand the laws. They have killed & maimed residents that have been well known, productive & contributing members of our area. Nothing happens to them. Cops take one look at them & walk away. Can’t be bothered to arrest them & ‘cause trouble’. Yet, on any given day, you can hit them up for drugs that will kill more.

Next week pick up the illegal selling candy, and have a safety check at the school to see that all drivers picking up kids have DL, registration, and insurance. Then check the immigration status of that principal. Next, run those kids names against the list of people who never showed up for their asylum court hearings and arrest the ones who match.

Now to add to this mess the house passed a resolution allowing illegals to vote,Is it getting close to time to remove the criminals in our congress. They have done nothing but uphold these crimes which tells me they need to go.
