Update: One Austin police officer was shot and another was injured while trying to take cover when a gunman opened fire on them early Monday morning.
"The officers ran from the front of the house and jumped over a fence and called it in. And at that point we had multiple units responding to the scene," Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said during a news briefing Monday morning.
Eventually, the suspect tried to make a run for it while dragging a female hostage with him. SWAT shot and killed the suspect as he attempted to make his exit.
The officer who was shot in the arm was a five-year veteran of the department. The officer who injured his knee and hand escaping had been on the force for 16 years.
