BREAKING: Texas State Trooper Shot In Gunfight

Police are searching for a gunman who shot a Texas state trooper in Frisco on Friday afternoon.

Frisco, TX – A Texas state trooper was shot as he attempted to make a traffic stop in Frisco on Friday afternoon.

Police believe the gunman is still in the area but have not yet been able to locate him, KXAS reported.

Authorities have labeled the incident an “active-shooter situation” and told citizens to avoid the area on Lebanon Road, west of the intersection with Dallas North Tollway in Frisco.

Frisco police officers, that department’s SWAT team, and Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers have taken positions behind a DPS SUV that appeared to have had its tires shot out.

Witnesses said there was a green Pontiac Firebird parked in front of the disabled police SUV at the La Valencia at Starwood apartment complex, with a door open and a long gun on the ground laying on the ground beside it.

There were several bullet holes in the back window of the Firebird, KXAS reported.

No one was visible inside the vehicle from news helicopters.

DPS Spokesman Lonny Haschel said the state trooper tried to make a traffic stop on the Dallas North Tollway at about 2:15 p.m. on March 29, but the driver refused to stop, KXAS reported

The trooper followed the driver into the parking lot of the La Valencia apartment complex and that’s when the driver suddenly stopped, Haschel said.

At some point in the next moments, the trooper was shot.

A Frisco police officer arrived on the scene and transported the wounded trooper to the hospital in his police vehicle, KXAS reported.

There was no word on the condition of the trooper.

UPDATE: The trooper is in stable condition and out of surgery.

Haschel said he didn’t have any additional details, but reiterated that the shooter had not yet been caught and police are actively searching for suspects, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Starwood Montessori School, located across the street from where the incident occurred, remained in lockdown.
