Miami, FL – A Miami-Dade police officer was shot multiple times in a gunfight in a Walmart parking lot early Wednesday afternoon.
Police are investigating what led to the shootout which left a police officer wounded, and the suspect dead.
A tarp covered a deceased individual in the parking lot of the Walmart, which was cordoned off extensively with crime scene tape, WFOR reported. The body under the yellow tarp is believed to be that of the person who shot the police officer.
Police said Officer Gonazlez, a six-year veteran of the department, was shot while working an off-duty assignment at the store.
Officers responded to the scene at the Liberty City Walmart, located at Northwest 79th Street and 32nd Avenue, at around 1 p.m. on Dec. 6.
Police transported Officer Gonzalez to Jackson Memorial Hospital in a police cruiser. Parts of the highway were shut down to expedite the trip, police said.
Officer Gonzalez limped from the police car into the emergency room with the help of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
Witnesses said the officer was bleeding from the leg.
“At close range, he was able to survive multiple gunshot wounds,” Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez told reporters. “He’s in great spirits.”
Police said Officer Gonzalez is married and has two children. He was working the off-duty job at Walmart to earn extra money for the holidays.
“We ask for support and prayers from the community. More info to come as we get it. Please be patient while we sort things out and acquire more information,” Director Perez said in a statement.
“He is stable, thank God, and now we are going to let the investigation take its course. Our concern right now is the condition of the officer and, for now, our prayers are answered,” said Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.
