Commerce, GA - A Banks County Sheriff's Deputy was shot Wednesday evening at Tanger Outlet in Commerce. The shooter escaped and there is now a massive manhunt underway to locate him.
The incident started with a report of an armed robbery at Atlanta Dragway at around 4 PM on Wednesday. Before deputies could arrive, the suspect stole a car, which was then located traveling near Tanger Outlet, according to WSBTV.
After a short pursuit, the suspect exited his vehicle and fired at the deputy who was pursuing him. One of the bullets struck the deputy in the chest as he still sat in his patrol car. Thankfully, the officer's ballistic vest stopped the bullet.
The suspect then fled while continuing to fire at the deputy, and he was able to get away. He is still on the loose and believed to be armed with two firearms.
He’s described as a black male in his 40s with short hair. He’s about 6 feet tall and weighs about 170 pounds, wearing dark clothing.
The manhunt is now centered around Steve Reynolds Boulevard.
The Tanger Outlet stores closed early as a precaution while the manhunt is underway.
The deputy was transported to the hospital and is stable condition.
We wish the best of luck and safety to all of the law enforcement officers hunting this would-be cop-killer.
