Two good Samaritans in Fresno helped police apprehend 29-year-old Michael Sanchez on Tuesday.

Fresno, CA – A suspect who fired multiple shotgun rounds at police on Tuesday is in custody after two good Samaritans jumped in to help officers take down the fleeing suspect.

The incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on March 24 after officers on routine patrol near downtown Fresno tried to affect a traffic stop on a speeding Nissan, KGPE reported.

The suspect vehicle fled and crashed near the intersection of East Grant Avenue and North Valeria Street.

After the wreck, the driver and the passenger both jumped out of the car and officers could see the driver had a sawed-off shotgun, KGPE reported.

The driver – later identified as 29-year-old Michael Sanchez - opened fire on the officers, forcing them to take cover and return fire.

"As the driver began running from the officers, he turned and began firing at officers. Fearing for their safety, the officers returned fire," Fresno Police Captain Joey Alvarez said, according to KFSN.

The armed suspect attempted to flee on foot but a legally-armed good Samaritan stepped up to help police, according to KGPE.

"The individual brandished the gun at him and fearing for his safety, the citizen also shot at our suspect," Capt. Alvarez said

The good Samaritan fired rounds at Sanchez, who dropped to the ground when he was struck, but then quickly got back up and ran.

He fled to a nearby apartment complex and tried to force his way into a home, but that’s when a second good Samaritan appeared to foil his plan, KGPE reported.

The man tackled the armed suspect to the ground and held him there until police caught up and were able to take him into custody, KGPE reported.

“Right now we’re incredibly lucky that no officer was hurt and no citizen was hurt,” Capt. Alvarez said.

Police said Sanchez is a known gang member, KGPE reported.

Sanchez was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his chest and was reportedly in “stable condition.”

It wasn’t yet known whether he was shot by police or the helpful armed citizen.

Fresno Police Sergeant Jeff La Blue said Sanchez has been charged with attempted murder on a police officer and felon in possession of a firearm, according to KGPE.

The passenger in Sanchez’s car – 40-year-old Louis Longinos - fled the scene but was later apprehended by police at the address where they suspect vehicle was registered.

Longinos was released without charges, KGPE reported.

Too bad the Ahole isn't dead but still pretty cool

It's going to get worse now with this Covid 19 thing. Gangs of thugs are paroling the streets where I live, robbing mostly single men/women and hurting old people. Everyone needs to be aware of what's around them and beware.

This is why you need to carry a gun. Put the liberal politicians and other traitor democrats in jail.

Let's hope and pray this is just the beginning of the trend and tide turning in FAVOR of the police!!!! It's taken quite some time, but hopefully, people are seeing "WE" are not the enemy, but the enemy wants to hurt us and them!

I'm glad to see every one is complying with Cali's tough gun laws. NOT. Liberals just can't seem to get it...

Hope the good Sam gets a good lawyer to defend against the liberal onslaught awaiting him. That said, it is refreshing to see Commiefornians stepping up to the plate.

Did Michael Sanchez not know it is illegal to posses a sawed off shot gun? I’m sure if he knew it was illegal he would have turned it in to the police.

It never ceases to amaze me how many non police talk about how easy it must be to shoot a moving suspect, while the officer is taking cover. Obviously, it would be nice if all the bad guys were instantly neutralized, but that isn't real life. All you armchair people need to give it a rest. The good guys won. The guy got shot in the chest, must not have hit the right artery or organ, so now I guess you say they are bad shots because they didn't hit the aorta.

Look at what the gun did to that poor suspect! The gun nearly killed him! We need to ban all guns!

Spoiler alert: sarcasm

"The good Samaritan fired rounds at Sanchez, who dropped to the ground when he was struck, but then quickly got back up and ran...". Isn't this a caliber problem? I keep seeing videos and reading stories of violent armed perps getting shot but continuing to resist and even shoot back. Does this happen w 45ACP or is it a problem associated with the politically correct 9x19? I can still remember when law enforcement ditched its 38 Specials for .357 and 9mm was considered just as inadequate at 38. One could argue that the new FBI 9x19 147 grain round is just a 38 special by another name. I don't believe that business about bullet technology making so much of a difference. I just keep seeing this over and over again, officers remaining at risk after making good hits. Or suspects going down after multiple hits, being apprehend and talking and moving for several minutes before bleeding out. Even zippy +P 9x19 is not the same as the 600+ ft lbs of energy from the old 357 125 grain duty load. I'm curious what officer experience is with medium vs. large bore or 357.

I’m a betting man. And I bet the criminal sues the two citizens...and wins. And I bet the two citizens are criticized by state officials.
