Activists Start Protests Over Ex-Cop Amber Guyger's 10-Year Sentence

Protesters began chanting in the lobby as soon as former Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger was sentenced to 10 years.

Dallas, TX – Protests began in the courthouse lobby shortly after a jury sentenced former Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger on Wednesday afternoon to 10 years for fatally shooting her neighbor thinking she was in her own apartment.

Guyger was convicted of first-degree murder on Tuesday and Black Lives Matter claimed a victory for justice against police brutality.

The shooting happened while Guyger was off-duty.

But the celebrations came to a crashing halt when the same jury that found her guilty of murder sentenced the former police officer to only 10 out of a possible 99 years in prison for the death of 27-year-old Botham Jean, FOX News reported.

Black Lives Matter activists were outraged at what they considered to be too light of a sentence for Guyger.

Even as the victim’s younger brother, Brandt Jean, was giving a victim impact statement in the courtroom during which he told Guyger he loved her and forgave her and didn’t want her to have to go to prison, activists were chanting in the courthouse lobby and staging protests outside the courthouse for early evening.

“I want the best for you,” Brandt Jean said. “Because I know as well that’s exactly what Botham would want for you. And the best would be to give your life to Christ.”

Jean’s family and local pastors have called for peaceful protests, but his mother, Allison Jean, also told reporters in the courthouse lobby that she wanted the Dallas Police Department to clean house and accused police of corruption in investigating her son’s death.

“If Amber Guyger was trained not to shoot in the heart, my son would be standing here today,” Allison Jean said. “Every single one of you, citizens of Dallas ... need to know what to do to get your city right.”

Officer Guyger was initially arrested on a manslaughter charge on Sept. 9, three days after she fatally shot Jean in his apartment.

A grand jury later indicted her for murder. A murder conviction could put Guyger behind bars for life, whereas manslaughter would have carried a maximum penalty of 20 years, the Dallas Morning News reported.

After having worked 14 hours serving warrants in high crime areas of the city, the exhausted officer parked on the wrong floor of the parking garage adjacent to her apartment building, WCAU reported.

The arrest affidavit said the garage levels correspond with the floors in the apartment complex. Officer Guyger lives on the 3rd Floor of the Southside Flats apartment complex and should have parked on the 3rd floor where her apartment was.

But the off-duty officer parked on the 4th floor of the parking garage and proceeded into the building, where she went to the door of the apartment she believed to be her own and used her key.

The door wasn’t fully shut and opened right away.

The sound of the door opening alerted Jean, who was home alone in his apartment watching football.

The affidavit said Jean went to see what was going on at his front door.

Officer Guyger told investigators she saw the silhouette of someone in what she believed to be her own apartment, and drew her firearm, WCAU reported. The affidavit said she believed she was being robbed.

She gave verbal commands that were ignored by Jean, according to the affidavit. Then she fired her weapon in the dark at the person twice, striking him once.

The arrest affidavit said it wasn’t until Officer Guyger was already on the phone with 911, that she reached to turn on the lights and she realized she was not in her own apartment.

She went into the hall and checked the address on the door and confirmed for the dispatchers that she was in unit 1478, one floor above her own apartment, WCAU reported.

Jean was transported to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas where he later died.

Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall announced that Guyger had been fired from the police force on Sept. 24, but not for the shooting.

🤣🤣🤣I mean, you had to have seen this one coming. 10 years for a convicted murderer is ridiculous.

"10 years for a convicted murderer is ridiculous". I may have to side with lcd on this one. I think 5 years would have been plenty.

I cannot recall ever hearing of such a light sentence for murder but oh well buckle up blueboys it's gonna be a rough ride with all the protests.

C'mon, who could have seen this coming? The shooter was arrested, charged with an elevated charge 5o satisfy the protesters and she was convicted by a jury of her peers... What more do you want? Oh that's right, the shooter was white, and the victim was black, they won't be happy unless she gets the death penalty.

And people say she was treated just like every other criminal; this protest shows just how untrue that claim is

My goodness. Jean's brother gives Guyger forgiveness and a hug.

Speechless. He's incredible, probably like his brother.

I think I got something in my eye...

10 years for what should have been manslaughter. These animals will never be satisfied. Ever.

Them colored peeps will be contacting their homies in the joint to make sure she is tortured daily while in there. Just like the Chicago cop, who was sentenced for killing the black thug. They ambushed him all the way in Connecticut! Any white person I have met, who was in the joint has a seething hatred for blacks. They really should have a separate prison facility for people like her.

Now that's racest if you ask. All you black people should be ashamed of yourselfs. I am white lady in a man's job. She was trained to protect everyone not just herself. Accidents happen, the lady already feels bad, she'll have to deal with that the rest of her life. Better be put in a cell buy herself. She mite not even come out alive. What happened to forgiveness. She should get something, but not murder.

Juries typically have a way of doing the right thing. Guyger was arguably overcharged. At the very least, the jury should have been given the option of the lesser included offense of manslaughter. Given the racially charged atmosphere the prosecution did not do the right thing -- so the jury did.

It’s interesting that as a society, in the last decade basically during the Obama administration, how segregated and inhumane we have become.

How dare these activist think their opinion supersedes that of the brother and judge.

Black Lives Matter is a racist group who don’t care about black lives because of they did, they would focus on the 7000 black on black murders each year in US and not the dozen or so white on black murders each year. They’re living in their ignorant silo.

Hey @Hi_estComnDenomn , I know you seem to think that BLM had nothing to do with this circus, maybe you should review these reports:

"Guyger was convicted of first-degree murder on Tuesday and Black Lives Matter claimed a victory for justice against police brutality." and "Black Lives Matter activists were outraged at what they considered to be too light of a sentence for Guyger."

it's these SJW who protested everywhere, and resulted in the charges to be incorrectly elevated to murder, and following a conviction, they still aren't happy. The jury decided on an appropriate punishment; and yet, the libtard BLM protesters will never think it's a long enough sentence, even when the victim's sister felt it was. What does that tell you about whose interests BLM is looking out for?

First degree murder makes no goddamn sense. How did they prove elements of murder 1?? I'm missing something... like her intent to commit murder maybe? WTAF.... regardless, BLM wouldn't be happy even if she were skinned alive. Fuck them...🙄

To the Protesters --- Why don't you put your Blind Hatred to good use ?? Try WORKING with the Police to clean up your Neighborhoods ! How about doing something about the Thugs and Gang members in your areas -- or the Drug dealers praying on your children ~~ or the Theft from not only the retail stores but from One another -- or the Domestic Abuse that runs wild in your area's -- this you sit on your asses about and you ALL suffer for it !! How about Protesting This !!!

They'll appeal it and have her out in less than a year and on probation. It was a damn accident, no malice involved. Ice cream is dangerous to your health.

Sadly, two families will never be the same. Jean's brother just be one if the most decent people on this planet for his kind words and forgiveness. Amber has to live with this for the rest of her life. I'm sure she feels horrible. We can't reverse time. We're supposed to move forward and learn. In these generic looking apartment complexes where every floor looks the same, entering the wrong unit is easily done. I did it as a child and suddenly realized I wasn't Chinese, my friend down the hall was. It's 2019, lock your doors when and when you're not home. Make it a habit. Tie something to the door that will share give you a cue that it's not your place. Bells work well. This was a horrible, tragic accident. Instead it propegating hate, and using a good man's name and death as your platform, try using education. Good can come of this. The hate baiting media, the ignorant, and the true colors if the minority that fuel these actions will show instead. To the minority that do this stupid crap: Where do you all work that you get that much time off to run amuck, keep your kids out of school because you feel they should see this, run your mouth to any reporter that will listen to your reasons that make sense to no one but you, and feel you have the right to assault police officers, loot businesses, clean out the liquor stores, and burn blocks down?

Forget "Black Lives Matter"...that organization is not effective to me...just riotous leaders going here and there for a cause that has all but dried up...BUT..if it is as was presented, I have to agree...10 years seems very minimal for the severity of the charge and the "random" killing.

Wow, a lot of white nationalist/ racists on here spewing their filthy bigoted opinions here. Pale she devil Guyger was convicted of murder. During the trial she stated that she intended to kill Mr Botham Jean. He didn't shoot himself. This white murderer un-holstered her gun and shot an unarmed man eating ice cream. Then when she realized her mistake, called for back up, narcissistically whined about her job, didn't attempt CPR or attempt to stop the bleeding with the triage equipment she had. Sounds like murder to me. Then after finding her guilty, which was the right thing to do, they give her 10 years. A light sentence for murder, but apparently just the right sentence if your a white female, apparently. (There's the possibility that Guyger wanders into GenPop and meets with a shiv) At least that other pale blue eyed devil Roy Oliver devil got 15 years which was also light. With all the bigotry and non empathy that you showed for Botham Jean I can certainly see why people celebrate the deaths of officers now. If you don't care why should they. I know some people who celebrated the shooting events in Dallas and New Orleans in 2016. I don't care if any one of you are offended since you obviously don't care about what you say either. Have a good day.
