86-Year-Old Woman Dies After Being Punched For Not Social Distancing

Hospital patient Cassandra Lundy punched 86-year-old fellow patient Janie Marshall, knocking her off of her feet.

Brooklyn, NY – An 86-year-old woman died after being punched by a woman who accused her of not abiding by social distancing recommendations.

The attack occurred at approximately 2 p.m. on Saturday, after 86-year-old Janie Marshall went to Woodhull Hospital in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood due to a bowel obstruction, the New York Daily News reported.

While in the hallway, Marshall grabbed ahold of a metal stand that was near another patient’s bed, according to police.

That’s when the other patient got out of her bed and punched Marshall, knocking her to the ground, the New York Post reported.

The elderly woman cracked her head on the floor as a result of the blow.

The other patient, identified as 32-year-old Cassandra Lundy, told a New York City Department of Health and Hospitals (NYCDHH) police officer that she punched the elderly woman because she “didn’t stay more than six feet away” from her, the New York Post reported.

According to the New York Daily News, Lundy was at the hospital due to having experienced a seizure.

The New York Post reported that she was there awaiting psychiatric treatment.

She was ultimately issued a summons for disorderly conduct and left the hospital without being admitted.

Marshall underwent a CT scan and was waiting to be examined by the doctor when hospital personnel found her slumped over at approximately 5:40 p.m., the New York Post reported.

She was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) was not notified about the incident until approximately five hours after Marshall died.

Sources said that the delay in contacting the NYPD was due to the massive influx of coronavirus cases that have left hospital personnel swamped, the New York Post reported.

Investigators and prosecutors are awaiting the results of an autopsy in order to determine whether or not Lundy will face additional charges, according to the New York Daily News.

She has a total of 17 prior arrests on her record, including offenses of strangulation, assault, trespass, and drug possession.

The attack was captured on video.

Marshall’s neighbors said she was a “nice lady” who was “very helpful,” the New York Post reported.

She lived by herself and did not have any children, sources told the paper.

“It just goes to show, you never know," her neighbor, 87-year-old Eartha Calloway told the New York Daily News. "You don’t ever know what’s going to happen to you. You could be walking down the hall and someone hits you in the hospital.”

The NYCDHH, which operates Woodhull Hospital, said in a statement that it was “saddened” by the elderly woman’s death, the New York Daily News reported.

"We are committed to ensuring a safe, health-focused environment in these very demanding times so our heroic health care workers can continue to deliver the quality, compassionate care New Yorkers need more than ever. We are collaborating with the NYPD in their investigation,” the statement read.

Unfortunate incident by someone who should have had psychiatric help long before this.

I know seizures can really mess with your brain chemistry, but I just can't fathom ever thinking that is the appropriate way to handle the situation. Makes me sick. May that poor woman get justice and rest in peace.

She has a violent rap sheet so it’s not about a seizure . Her violence never had such an egregious outcome so it went unchecked . And now it’s come to this . Horrible and sad . Poor lady had no one . Heartbreaking.

You hadn't yet noticed Stooge819, for the past few years now suspects and perps are shielded from public exposure and recognition. I've been rather pissed at this, another fine example of being "PC" BS!!

If she was violent why wasn’t she in a room locked or restrained so she could not hurt anyone? This poor woman died alone with no family. ( staff fund her slumped) PD was not called because they were too busy??? The whole incident is a Load of crap.

The fear factor of covid 19 has people loosing their minds. I expect more of this as people die and the media hypes it up as if the world is coming to an end.

Sounds like homicide to me. She intentionally intended to harm the lady before asking her to move away. But I'm sure they will explain away the real issue with some cockamamie story.

It's NYC what would you expect. Civil unrest is nothing new but in the times we're in it's only going to get worse I fear. Hopefully I'm wrong.

A tragic event. I hope that woman is arrested for what she did. Woodhull Hospital. Not the very best of hospitals in New York City, I can tell you that. It's also the hospital where Officers Ramos and Liu arrived dead on arrival after the incident. 2014 was an interesting year.

My guess is she was a drug seeker. "I had a seizure" is a commom presentation complaint for seekers in the ER due to the meds often given for that.
I notice she also didn't observe social distancing when she hit the poor woman.
As far as restraints-you have to go through a lot of crap/steps/documentation to be able to get the order to apply restraints and then you need q15's (assessments every 15 mins & documentation) or 1on1 (a staffmember literally with the pt 24/7) something tough for staff on a good day-I would imagine nearly impossible in these times.

The "attack" happened at 2:00 and she was found "slumped over in a chair" while waiting for examination by doctor. WHY after 3 hours and 40 minutes was she sitting in a chair?? Was she still waiting for the CT, or if she had already done CT, why didn't someone notice on the CT that she had an injury that actually needed a real bed?? And then, finally, why was the attacker cited by the hospital security and released to leave and the "attack" not reported to police until 5 hours after the death?? This story stinks to high heaven.
