7 People Struck By One Bullet During Family-Friendly Dance In Texas
Houston, TX – Seven people were wounded by a single bullet during a family-friendly community dance on Sunday evening.
The incident occurred at Mercado Sabadomingo on Airline Drive at approximately 7 p.m. on Feb. 22, KIAH reported.
Witnesses said a man pulled out a gun and fired one round, shooting a 30-year-old male in the thigh, The Washington Post reported.
The bullet passed through the victim’s leg and hit the concrete floor, at which point it fragmented.
Four men between the ages of 26 and 33, and two women who were ages 26 and 43, were struck by the shrapnel.
Approximately 10 law enforcement officers and 15 security guards were already at the scene at the time of the shooting, KIAH reported.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said they helped apply tourniquets to the wounded victims while emergency medical personnel responded, according to The Washington Post.
“We’re getting too much practice, to be quite honest,” Sheriff Gonzalez said.
All seven victims have been listed in good condition and are expected to make full recoveries.
The suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Jose Manuel Guerrero-Reyes, was taken into custody without incident, KIAH reported.
“He says apparently he had the gun in his pocket, but right now that doesn’t seem to match with the evidence we have,” Sheriff Gonzalez said. “We don’t know who he may have been aiming to. There appears to be no connection to initial male that was more seriously wounded.”
The sheriff said Guerrero-Reyes had been drinking prior to the shooting, The Washington Post reported.
The venue was clearly marked as a gun-free zone and children were among the attendees.
“We don’t know if he was fumbling around with the pistol, being irresponsible about it, or if he was actually intending to shoot somebody,” Sheriff Gonzalez said. “Guns and alcohol aren’t a good mix, especially when he’s not supposed to have a gun in this establishment.”
The sheriff said it is a “miracle” that more people weren’t wounded during the incident.
Guerrero-Reyes was arrested on a single count of felony aggravated assault, according to KIAH.
