A 23-year-old Georgia teacher was taken into custody on Monday.

Harlem, GA – A 23-year-old Georgia high school teacher was arrested for sexual assault on Monday, after investigators learned she had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a 19-year-old student.

Harlem High School teacher Lesley Douglas has been charged with one count of sexual assault against a person in custody, due to the fact that she was in a position of authority over the student, WRDW reported.

Although it was unclear whether or not the unnamed 19-year-old was one of Douglas’ students, the individual did attend the high school that Douglas taught at.

The alleged sexual contact occurred on Mar. 27, at a boat ramp in Appling, Georgia, according to Douglas’ arrest warrant.

Investigators made contact with school officials on Apr. 11, and Douglas resigned the following day, WLOX reported.

She had been with the Columbia County School district for approximately one year.

“The Columbia County School District is committed to providing its students with the best education possible in a safe, positive environment,” school officials said in a press release, according to WRDW. “In doing so, we hold our faculty and staff to the highest standards and have zero tolerance for any behavior that detracts from our mission."

Douglas appeared to be married, according to her social media accounts.

Douglas had not been offered bond, the Columbia County Sheriff’s office said, according to WRDW.

This incident comes after a 22-year-old female teacher in Connecticut was charged with three counts of felony sexual assault for having a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old male student who attended a different school in her school district.

If both parties were legally adults at the time of contact, and there are no allegations of any coercing, ie., it was consensual, why is there a legal issue?
Sure, let the school terminate her, but the charge doesn't fit the crime.

Because the student attended the school and she is therefore in a position of authority over him. She probably thought the same thing. But the law is clear. If he is a student and she the teacher, it is illegal.

Which is stupid. To some degree descretion needs to be used here because what is possible harm? Unless of course, the student is in someway developmentally challenged.

There is a line that must never be crossed, that of teacher/student. Even though there is was 4 years difference in ages, that she was a teacher in the school where the student attended makes all the difference.

This is plain BS. They are both adults, off school property and off the time clock. If it is consensual then it's none of anybody's business but theirs. Don't we have some more serious criminals we can go after? Let's track down some gas pump skimmers or something. PLEASE!

I agree with you Abetterdj but she no doubt knew the consequences if she made a choice to be with a student. Regardless of how dumb it is that two legal age adults can't have a relationship due to the circumstances, she is even dumber for crossing that line fully well Knowing it was illegal.

I simply have an issue with the stupidity of some of our teachers lately. There are so many that are doing these things and getting caught. It's not like we haven't heard about them on the news, being in court, the spouse divorcing them, jail or prison time, the associated financial struggles etc., etc. Are the teachers really dumb enough to think they will not get caught? These are the type of people we have "teaching" the children today?

In these situations I think we have to make a distinction between students who are above the states age of consent and those who aren't. If the only moral dilemma here is that a teacher is having sex with a student then that should be no more than a misdemeanor and implications on further employment. This behavior is totally unacceptable because of the precedent allowing this behavior would create in our school system. At the same time I can't in good conscience label this woman a criminal and sex offender for giving into her natural desires.

There is a 4 year age difference. She crossed the line as a teacher, but she is hardly a child abuser.

Why is it a CRIMINAL issue though? This sounds more like something that HR should have dealt with. He's not underage. Fire her, revoke her teaching license, whatever, but prison?

seriously, why could i not have been sexuaally assaulted by a teacher that looked like her when i was in high school?

"boys" are "MEN" at 18 and can die in war. They aren't "minors" and it's legal for an 18 year old "boy" to marry a 23 year old "woman"... someone needs to be less politically correct and let these young female teachers alone.

If you’re over the age of 18 and can’t make an adult decision like who to have sex with, then you shouldn’t own a gun, drive a car, or vote.

They’re not children. Again, if he’s not developmentally challenged, then it’s his choice. It’s a stupid law, made because the town doesn’t think much of its population.

As a retired investigator for Florida Department of Education let me say that teachers are held to a higher standard. There are Codes of Ethics that a teacher can not violate. If a teacher has an inappropriate relationship with a student -even a 19 year old - this is an indication that the teacher is capable of violating the same code of ethics with another student.
We trust teachers with our children’s safety and well-being.
She is a person who has authority over the students. As a person in authority the relationship is not considered consensual. If she wanted a relationship with a student at her school she needed to wait until he graduated and was no longer a student.
She knew the rules and consequences. Students do not have a “choice” to become sexually involved with a person of authority.

Well like everything else in Florida, the justification for this rule is fucking stupid. Are you allowed to jail people for possible crimes committed?

And again, the school should be handling this, not the police. Unless of course it was an actual rape or coercion of a minor/mentally challenged individual.

You can have your standards, but if it turns out this was a mutual relationship, conflating assaults with conflicts of interest are one of the many reasons why the rest of the US likens Florida to a glorified shit hole, filled with nursing homes and cocaine.

Georgia Law makes it a crime with people as follows: Teacher, principal, assistant principal, or other school administrator;
Probation or parole officer having authority over a probationer or parolee;
Employee or agent of a law enforcement agency with a person detained or in custody;
Employee or agent of a hospital who has sexual contact with a patient while being treated;
Employee or agent of a correctional or juvenile justice facility, or disability facility; and
Psychotherapists with their patients. It is basically making the subordinate individual unable to make the decision of consent based on the fact that the one in the authoritative state would have persuasive advantage over the other.

Georgia and yes you do arrest people on possible crimes committed that's where the trial and evidence comes into play. If she had total innocence I don't think she would have resigned but we don't know the circumstances we don't know if she even knew he was a student where she taught they may have met outside of school. They are in a close age category and it is very possible they met outside of ever knowing the other had connections to the school. I'm sure all that will be taken into consideration with testimony and phone records. If the 19yo states they met outside of school and they didn't know of one another than the case will be thrown out.

It's a case of institutional rape or sexual assault. She should be punished period. I'm from West Mifflin, Pa. and we have a highschool teacher that recently was caught doing the same thing. He reportedly has been doing it for years unpunished. The victim bashing in that case was horrific even though it started when she was 17.

There must be a clear concise line here in order to protect all of our students. How would you Men and Women who have an 15, 16 17, 18 or 19 year old Daughter like if some 45 year old married teacher was having sex with them? Your attitude might be different. The law is not stupid. It is to protect all of them. We can't pick and choose. This teacher could have waited until he graduated or she could have left and got a job at Walmart. I as a health care professional was more than happy to follow the law.

Why is it that 90% of these teachers getting caught for having sex with students are beautiful and usually married? I don't understand what they can be thinking. Almost all seem to get caught eventually.

Hi_estComnDenomn

@LEO0301 they probably have retired old guys for husbands, and they haven't gotten it up since Bush II was elected. Then the rapists turn toward their students.

By the way, how old is your wife?

Brockettj

15, 16 & 17 yes & I would do something about it but once they turn 18 they are free to choose who they go to bed with 18-80. Also the boy was not 45!
If this is a HR violation, find, but being put in jail for a HR violation is unheard of.

I don’t believe this was sexual assault. It was all by mutual concent

So let me see if I understand laws in US of A.
You can be tried as an adult for every crime in the book but if you decide to sleep with a teacher you, you are unable to make that decision? Yeah that makes sense. You people shouldn't be able to have it both ways. Ridiculous!!!

Right - I agree with y’all this shouldn’t be a criminal matter, because he was 19, and she was 23... and saying she’s in a position of authority of him, is like saying i can’t screw my boss at my job... But i wouldn’t be arrested then... the police just wanna make the rules and when we find legitimate loopholes in the rules/laws they shut us down. If i was her attorney i would petition for a retrial, and say thay cuz i ain’t sitting in no jail cell for screwing someone who’s of age LMAO.
