2 SWAT Officers Suspended After Running In At Parkland Massacre

The Miramar police have suspended two members from the SWAT team who responded to the school shooting without orders.

Miramar, FL – The Miramar Police Department has suspended two officers from their SWAT team for responding to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting without having orders to do so.

When the first reports of an active shooter came out, the Miramar officers were in training in Coral Springs, nearby the Parkland high school, and they rushed to assist in stopping the carnage that left 17 students and faculty fatally shot, and another 16 wounded, on Valentine’s Day, the Miami Herald reported.

The police response to the mass shooting at the school – specifically that of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office – has been highly criticized for the incident commander’s failure to use updated active-shooter response methods.

Broward County Sheriff’s Captain Jan Jordan has been criticized for ordering officers to set up a perimeter rather than sending them in to stop the shooter, whose whereabouts were still unknown.

Several police officers and medics have reported that they believed more lives were lost because the incident commander wouldn’t let them respond earlier.

Some critics have called the officers who stayed outside and waited for permission to enter “cowards,” but now Miramar police are punishing two members of their own elite unit who did rush toward danger to try to save students' lives.

Miramar Police Detectives Jeffrey Gilbert and Carl Schlosser were suspended from the Miramar SWAT team eight days after the shooting in Parkland, according to the Miami Herald.

Both remain on active duty with the department, but working in different capacities, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

“Effective immediately you have been suspended from the SWAT Team until further notice,” Miramar SWAT team commander Captain Kevin Nosowicz wrote in a Feb. 22 memo. “Please make arrangements with the training department to turn in your SWAT-issued rifle.”

The memo said Det. Gilbert and Det. Schlosser acted “without the knowledge or authorization from your chain of command” and created an “officer safety situation due to dispatch not knowing your location or activity” by heading to the massacre-in-progress independently.

A Miramar PD spokesperson told Blue Lives Matter, "Miramar PD had numerous officers and a victim advocate respond, without incident. The two SWAT officers temporarily suspended from the SWAT team, but not active duty, were not suspended for responding, but for NOT advising that they responded. They did not advise prior to self-dispatching, during the incident, nor immediately following. This is an officer safety issue, a violation of policy and goes against incident command training and the best practices learned from other mass casualty / shooting incidents."

The Broward County police union disagreed strongly with discipline being levied against the detectives.

“While it may have been a violation of policy to not notify their supervisors that they were going there, their intentions were brave and heroic, I think,” Broward County Police Benevolent Association (PBA) President Jeff Marano told the Sun-Sentinel on Wednesday.

But Broward County law enforcement officials have said that it’s more important to have an organized response to an emergency situation, after more than 2,000 officers responded to the scene of an active shooter at Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Jan. 6, 2017.

The after-action report of the incident, which left five people dead and six others wounded, recommended a unified command structure with better communication in the future, to combat confusion caused by a massive influx of law enforcement officers to the scene, according to the Miami Herald.

Miramar Police Public Information Officer Tania Rues told the Miami Herald in an email that her department had dispatched several uniformed officers and a victim advocate to “assist” Broward County sheriff’s deputies at the high school.

However, Rues said the Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BSO) had said it did not need assistance from Miramar’s SWAT team.

“Miramar Police command staff placed our SWAT team on stand-by pending a request for additional assistance from BSO,” Rues wrote in the email. “[BSO] did not make a request for Miramar’s SWAT team based on their need at the time.”

Miramar Police Officer Kevin Gonzalez also was suspended from the SWAT team after having been accused of being linked to several social media posts that put the city and police in a negative light, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

Officer Gonzalez was suspended for violating the department’s social media policy and the code of conduct, Rues said.

A source told the Miami Herald that the posts questioned why Miramar’s SWAT team was not sent to confront shooter Nikolas Cruz, and said that the posts may have been made by Gonzalez’s girlfriend.

I think the Sheriff needs to be removed out of his position,These men that went to that school to try and save as many children as possible are hero and should be treated that way, they should be recognized as well,i know the families that had children at that school appreciate what they did,Maybe the Sheriff needs some bigger balls then what he has he must be scared of his own shadow, These men was doing a job that they are trained for and putting their lives on the line while the others are standing behind barricades hiding because they was scared, come on you are suppose to protect i don't call hiding protecting, ya'll have no idea what to do in this situation, A petition needs to be started to get these men back to their jobs on the swat team there is no reason they should have been suspended, Broward has a serious problem and it starts with the Sheriff

This is a perfect example of how media twists the narrative, and controls people, and millions fall for it everyday, Our press may be free but it sure isnt honest,

Hero's always get shit on by the incompetent and lazy upper management. The officers were doing what comes naturally to all military and law enforcement. Helping the weak. The leadership in this department needs to either be fired or retrained. Thank those of this department who uphold the high standards of the department they work for. Jim Hanson. Retired Marine.

Hi Buzz, my thoughts on this is there is something fishy going on with all these mass shootings. I am not saying our Government is hiring these people to commit these shootings, but what we have learned is the facts that each of these shooters have prior head problems, have been turned over to the FBI and the FBI seems to ignore such cases. This is my question! Why is the FBI ignoring these cases? My thoughts are if they wait till these horrible shootings happen, then there will be another cry for gun control! They are all part of a terrible scheme to rid every household of their weapons of which in time will lead to a communistic runned one world government!

Two brave men rushed in to save lives without regard to their own personal safety. This is what hero's are made of. These men deserve awards not suspensions.

We have video of 3-4 swat dressed characters hauling a heavy duffel bag out of the school (crime scene) and loading it into the back of an unmarked white pickup truck. We also have a teacher telling GMA about a shooter dressed in full body armor, helmet, face mask shooting a strange gun down the hallway. BTW, the truck driver threw 2 bags out of the truck onto the ground and they were retrieved by these "cops". This article is an effort to get the public thinking there were 1st responders dressed like swat in order to explain away the video capturing them coming out of the crime scene hauling equipment away. Where is the equipment Cruz was supposedly wearing? How'd he get it to the school? Where is the strange gun the teacher witnessed? How about ballistics tests? Why is everyone in a hurry to tear down this building? This is NOT the way to investigate a crime scene and Broward PD is up to their ass in the coverup.

Command and control. These officers entering without notification and authorization had the great potential for disaster. What if the active shooter was dressed in camo's and entry vest? Other responding officers may have seen the two suspended officers as the shooter and turned this into a bigger cluster. Unless they were all on a mutual aid tac frequency and they let everyone know they were making entry, bad call on the part of the suspended officers. Everybody wants to save lives, but lets not take them in unorganized haste in disregard to officer and citizen safety...

The news media hasn't been honest in quite some time. It goes back to the Vietnam War. Today, a majority of the news media are nothing but the propaganda arm of the DNC. This is why the left hammers Fox News so much because they refuse to buy into the narrative and actually give both sides. In fact, there are more liberals on Fox News in a single day than conservatives on any of the other networks combined.

So PLEASE tell us the REAL Story! Im interested to hear WHY a SWAT TEAM is being suspended for entering where there is a LIVE SHOOTING-WAS there a shooting at all...We know Israel and et al were told to "StandDown" ...Swat never has a problem entering the wrong house on occassion with a telephone pole with guns drawn at someones home...but can't enter a school with a shooter? Please TELL US ALL WHY?

One must understand the amount of chaos at the scene. In these situations where you have more than one department responding there needs to be once voice in command and that commander needs to be aware of any assets at the scene, where they are and what type response they might be taking or preparing to take. These two officers, though their bravery was exemplary, could have easily screwed up other actions that were being taken by other units. I think that the suspension was too harsh and should have been used instead as a teaching tool, but they were wrong to not advise of their presence and activities. If you know anything about SWAT team work you would know how dangerous this was to everyone involved including the two officers. I will say that there was an issue of command and control here where there was insufficient leadership shown at the scene.

They were not disciplined for entering the building, they were disciplined because noone knew they entered the building, if u read the first paragraph they were training nearby, and answered the call, but the local pd authorities didnt know they had entered, that was there mistake NOT that they entered the building, its a BS headline

Like the saying goes, "No good deed goes unpunished," when it comes to a school full of kids,i think SWAT feels that NEED for IMMEDIATE Action!!! Look at how many kids have been lost in the past! We KNOW the statistics if nobody gets into that school to find the shooter Immediately! I have no doubt, that 17 lives wouldnt have been lost, had they gotten in and the Browards wouldnt have been cowards! Less injuries as well. We all know what TRUE heros are,it sure wasnt #BrowardsCowards!

Good, Now they can sue the pants off the socialist bstrd that suspended them and go get a job with a PD that likes HEROS

I would think they reacted because they cared. I get they were training nearby, but they didn't respond as a member of SWAT, just as men who could make a difference. If you're trying to tell me that a member of SWAT can't react to ANY situation because there is an internal force policy stating they can't, I say that agency has it's head up their a$$es. My husband is a retired deputy, I can't tell you the number of times he has voluntarily reacted to "dangerous" situations when not "on-duty." Emergency responders do this because it's who they are.

The Chief of Police for Miramar PD needs to be fired along with Scott Israel! Heroes are what these two SWAT officers are. They are SWORN TO PROTECT AND SAVE and that is exactly what they were doing.

CCrease,
Really it doesn't say they were interior causing a conflict.
Its not being dispatched.
As a firefighter this commonly happens when neighborhood departments have turf wars.
I have dispatched myself on a few occasions they should have been dispatched. It's not like they drove across the state and got there a day late. Another stupid way to not do your job and save lives.
If they had checked in on scene they would have found officers sitting on their ass outside if they went in they were right.

It just proves more and more that this was a planned attack to try and take the peoples guns. Everyone involved in stopping this should all be tryed for murder and also convicted, including that Hillary loving Sherriff, who I´m sure was behing this totally!

Read the article, people. It says they weren't suspended for going in; they were suspended for not advising their higher-ups that they were responding.

It's all about protocol. All cops know, when "on the clock," they do not automatically rush to anything in anther jurisdiction, without a request from the jurisdiction asking for help and second without being dispatched by their own agency. SWAT officers should know this ...
