2 SWAT Officers Suspended After Running In At Parkland Massacre

The Miramar police have suspended two members from the SWAT team who responded to the school shooting without orders.

Miramar, FL – The Miramar Police Department has suspended two officers from their SWAT team for responding to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting without having orders to do so.

When the first reports of an active shooter came out, the Miramar officers were in training in Coral Springs, nearby the Parkland high school, and they rushed to assist in stopping the carnage that left 17 students and faculty fatally shot, and another 16 wounded, on Valentine’s Day, the Miami Herald reported.

The police response to the mass shooting at the school – specifically that of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office – has been highly criticized for the incident commander’s failure to use updated active-shooter response methods.

Broward County Sheriff’s Captain Jan Jordan has been criticized for ordering officers to set up a perimeter rather than sending them in to stop the shooter, whose whereabouts were still unknown.

Several police officers and medics have reported that they believed more lives were lost because the incident commander wouldn’t let them respond earlier.

Some critics have called the officers who stayed outside and waited for permission to enter “cowards,” but now Miramar police are punishing two members of their own elite unit who did rush toward danger to try to save students' lives.

Miramar Police Detectives Jeffrey Gilbert and Carl Schlosser were suspended from the Miramar SWAT team eight days after the shooting in Parkland, according to the Miami Herald.

Both remain on active duty with the department, but working in different capacities, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

“Effective immediately you have been suspended from the SWAT Team until further notice,” Miramar SWAT team commander Captain Kevin Nosowicz wrote in a Feb. 22 memo. “Please make arrangements with the training department to turn in your SWAT-issued rifle.”

The memo said Det. Gilbert and Det. Schlosser acted “without the knowledge or authorization from your chain of command” and created an “officer safety situation due to dispatch not knowing your location or activity” by heading to the massacre-in-progress independently.

A Miramar PD spokesperson told Blue Lives Matter, "Miramar PD had numerous officers and a victim advocate respond, without incident. The two SWAT officers temporarily suspended from the SWAT team, but not active duty, were not suspended for responding, but for NOT advising that they responded. They did not advise prior to self-dispatching, during the incident, nor immediately following. This is an officer safety issue, a violation of policy and goes against incident command training and the best practices learned from other mass casualty / shooting incidents."

The Broward County police union disagreed strongly with discipline being levied against the detectives.

“While it may have been a violation of policy to not notify their supervisors that they were going there, their intentions were brave and heroic, I think,” Broward County Police Benevolent Association (PBA) President Jeff Marano told the Sun-Sentinel on Wednesday.

But Broward County law enforcement officials have said that it’s more important to have an organized response to an emergency situation, after more than 2,000 officers responded to the scene of an active shooter at Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Jan. 6, 2017.

The after-action report of the incident, which left five people dead and six others wounded, recommended a unified command structure with better communication in the future, to combat confusion caused by a massive influx of law enforcement officers to the scene, according to the Miami Herald.

Miramar Police Public Information Officer Tania Rues told the Miami Herald in an email that her department had dispatched several uniformed officers and a victim advocate to “assist” Broward County sheriff’s deputies at the high school.

However, Rues said the Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BSO) had said it did not need assistance from Miramar’s SWAT team.

“Miramar Police command staff placed our SWAT team on stand-by pending a request for additional assistance from BSO,” Rues wrote in the email. “[BSO] did not make a request for Miramar’s SWAT team based on their need at the time.”

Miramar Police Officer Kevin Gonzalez also was suspended from the SWAT team after having been accused of being linked to several social media posts that put the city and police in a negative light, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

Officer Gonzalez was suspended for violating the department’s social media policy and the code of conduct, Rues said.

A source told the Miami Herald that the posts questioned why Miramar’s SWAT team was not sent to confront shooter Nikolas Cruz, and said that the posts may have been made by Gonzalez’s girlfriend.

Stuff like this is why police departments across the nation are full of beta males and cowards. They literally punish the few men remaining in the field who will run into a life or death situation to save people.

This is why I retired after 25+. My son is not happy in Dallas in is leaving. The department and union are progressive shxt bags.

So what if a citizen runs in and engages the bad guy?! Are we going to charge him for having balls and the courage to put his/her life on the line to save many more lives?! WTF!

Really, it is looking more & more like this was a planed shooting & the administration or mayor or gov. are all in on it. Why would they be angry at 2 officers, the only 2 officers, who honored their oath to protect & serve the citizens of this city!

These two Officers are HEROES! Whoever suspended them should have coward tattooed on his forehead. The person that suspended them caved in to political hooey. A chief that does not stand behind his officers should resign for he is not worthy to command these heroes.

Those two are heroes, come to AZ, we appreciate people like you, Florida is a jacked up joke!

I worked for the same kind of department until we got a new chief. Punishing cops for every tiny deviation from policy and procedure, regardless of intention or outcome. Pathetic.

It sounds like they have some really screwed up people running some departments down there. I feel very sorry for the officers that are trying to do a good job, but even more so for the citizens that must endure command officers with a big ego and little knowledge!

suspended for actually caring to get into that school and save lives and do what they are trained to do? Not sure how anyone could have stood outside hiding while shots were heard loud and clear. What really happened in that school? This is where qestions begin.

This is just crazy! Those two should be getting medals, the hell with protocol, they are tasked with serving and protecting, they were trying to save the lives of children. This story just keeps getting worse and worse.

Do they lobotomize police commanders in that part of Florida? When the rules are more important than human life, something is seriously effing wrong with these people. Chew them out for violating policy, great. Been there. But they were suspended because they tried to save human life in an active situation, where children were being killed. That makes no damn sense at all.

Our country is in deep trouble. They should be praised for having the courage to try to save lives while the county cops stood outside shaking like a whore in church

How the hell do departments expect to attract new officers with bull like this. I also thought that the new protocol for active shooter situations is for the first officers on scene go in and not set up perimeters. I would take a suspension for not radioing in as long as I felt my presence saved some lives.

I thought police, on duty or off duty, in their jurisdiction or not, were required to respond to nearby calls??? What is wrong with these Florida police departments??? Telling cops to wrongly stand down while kids are being slaughtered and now punishing those brave souls that went in to end the massacre!!! The Florida Governor needs to take control of the police departments in his state and clean house of all these idiot, political heads of these departments and let the GOOD, BRAVE cops do their job!!!

Sounds more and more like the lib shitbags in florida created this school shooting to make President Trump look bad.
Sheriff new this kid was a time bomb.fbi new he was dieing to kill
And school and social workers new he was a time bomb. All did nothing.
Everyone forgets the Conneticuit school shooting few yrs back cops there too took 20 minutes to enter the school and till this day there is no police report, ballistics report and all autopsies are bared from release. No proof he used a rifle. I was watching news that day and they held up a rifle and said it was found in his car.
And there too rush to pass bs gun control. Kid took the guns from his mother after he shot her.

Also pathetic these cops suspended for doing the right thing. Florida is just has northeast mental cancer of fucking their own cops.

Maybe using this as a “coaching” incident for these officers would be better. Since I work on the other side, there is nothing like not knowing where your officers are or are not, in a situation like this. These officers had a duty within their Standard Operating Procedure to contact dispatch to let them know they were enroute, when they were on scene, and there status while they are there until they are code 4 (ok and no further checks are needed). By them not doing this, makes me see red flags and makes me believe that they knew they were not supposed to be going straight to the scene, and were on stand by. Which then... is plain insubordination. Hero’s or not

Teddy Roosevelt said it best: "The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life."

The only two officers who showed any sense of duty, are being punished for doing their job! Is it any wonder why this law enforenforcement agency is a national laughingstock?

What a croc!!!! The only 2 cops in the whole place that showed courage by trying to bring the situation to an end, and this is how they get treated. Miramar Police need to reinstate these guys back to SWAT immediately. I salute those 2 officers

Yes they should have notified the chain of command and be reprimanded but at least they weren’t cowards and hid behind a bush. It should matter they were the only 2 that had balls enough to rush in, doing what a real officer and swat officer would do, we need these type of officer on our streets. They put their lives on the line to help defuse a situation when the cowards of Broward hid behind vehicles and waited while the killings continued. I prey if this ever happens to a school around here no Lesbo looking commander tells our officers to stand and hold while the gunman continues to kill innocent kids. Broward County Sheriffs Department should be ashamed of themselves not for just standing and watching but also for letting the shooter an 18 year old kid, get away and walking out right under their noses. How embarrassing to know a 18 year old little boy with no training bit from a video game outsmarted them. Turn in your sheild and gun and I’d look for a different line of work.

Nobody-
Nobody-

From reading the article, if they had of reported in, they would have been stood down and instructed not to respond.

Sometimes doing the right thing is more important than your job. I bet the suicide rates will be lower for officers that charged in than the ones sitting back letting it happen. Well the conscientious officers anyway, that onsite commander probably sleeps like a baby. She prevented any officer involved fatality by giving the killer space to work. And isnt that the main focus of policing these days? And the whole point of supporting disarming the public, to protect criminals from harm.

This is very sad...the ones who were supposed to help the kids~DIDN'T, and the two who tried to help~ ARE BEING PUNISHED... really scares me, as I have family in Florida, and I would be firing the Sheriff and his do nothing officers, and giving these guys medals!

Those officers going in may BE THE reason he ditched his weapon and acted like a student and fleeing the scene. Who knows? I disagree with them not letting the higher ups know what they did, but then again, it was the heat of the moment and they did what they were trained to do.

I am a former member of a large city police department. From all I read ans see about this incident, it's some kind of a clown show. The supervisors didn't have any idea of what to do, so they just looked at their text books for guidance. That was not a drill, people. Every second was critical. Where do they get their supervisors--from a buddy system?

DrJeffreyP
DrJeffreyP

This is a croc! Trust me on this, they weren't disciplined for not calling it in, that's for public consumption. They were disciplined for going in.

Steelerway

Obviously the supervisor was caught in the headlights like a deer worrying about lawsuits instead of saving lives. Time response matters in a situation like this and this Supervisor clearly wanted to set up a nice cushy command center and drink coffee while he thought about a plan.

Honestly I grew up literally walking to my highschool a block away. I was in the Marine corps after but if I heard shots fired I would be running in and clearing rooms.. arrest me afterwards if you want but lives are precious and these kids didn't need to lose theirs.. good on these guys for going in if they did. I'd be sitting home laughing at that suspension

that is bs...they were the only ones going toward the shooter..everyone else was outside..meanwhile back at the ranch..the shooter gets tired of shooting folks and walks out with everyone else and goes home...yeah great response guys..FUBAR

Dude....the shooter was long gone by the time SWAT got there....he was gone by the time the SRO was standing outside his post, not going in....so your “point” is not really a valid one. I am not agreeing or disagreeing with the decision to suspend, because I am not privy to all those details, just commenting on your point you are trying to make.....

KDeLong
KDeLong

I hope I never have this situation in my jurisdiction to where any of these decisions have to be made. With that, I'll take my days off if it means I may be the end to a horrific situation. We can fight about the days off later. It doesn't really say what the days off were for though - was it violating policy, disobeying a direct order, etc. I doubt it was "because they went into an active shooter situation to stop the threat".

Buzz17
Buzz17

There's something very fishy about this entire incident. Why would SWAT officers be disciplined for entering a building with an active shooter? Was there REALLY a "shooting" going on or was this entire thing a staged incident? The only reason I'm asking is that lots of things are not adding up anymore. Too many lies & lots of double-answers. Will we ever know the truth?

Duder1897
Duder1897

This article is bullshit. They weren't suspended for entering the building. They were suspended for not making their actions known. They could have made the situation much worse than it was.

It seems the Broward county Sheriff is the probem. It was his command staff that ordered the perimiter rather than going in, and refused the help of Mirimar, Yet he suspended the SRO for NOT going in. Sounds like his own little battle for power. I don't trust a single word he says (especially that he has shown "exceptional leadership"). He's a mere politician and should be removed from office ASAP. I'd love to see a press conference with the deputies and first responders who were actually there. Israel is only feeding us what he feels will make himself look good, not facts.
