2 Mississippi Deputies Shot By Kidnapping Suspect

Two Madison County sheriff's deputies were shot following a car chase on Thursday morning.

Canton, MS – Two Madison County sheriff’s deputies were shot during a vehicle pursuit on Thursday morning.

One of the deputies was shot in the head “at least once,” and was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Canton Mayor William Truly told the Clarion Ledger.

The deputy is currently undergoing surgery, officials said during a press conference early Thursday afternoon.

The condition of the second wounded deputy has not been released.

The incident occurred on Highway 16 near the intersection of Highway 43 at approximately 8:30 a.m., as the deputies were pursuing a dark-colored Jeep, the Clarion Ledger reported.

The driver of the Jeep had fled from a residence following a “domestic situation that turned into a kidnapping and hostage situation,” the district attorney said during the press conference.

The pursuit reached high rates of speed at times, until the suspect ultimately crashed into the ditch.

He then opened fire on the pursuing deputies, Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker said during the press conference.

The deputies returned fire, hitting the suspect.

The unidentified suspect was transported to an unspecified hospital with unknown injuries, Truly told the Clarion Ledger.

Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies swarmed the scene after the shooting.

The suspect’s vehicle’s front end was lodged in a ditch, and the driver’s side door was standing wide open.

Several local schools were placed in lockdown status during the pursuit, the Clarion Ledger reported.

The lockdowns have since been lifted.

“It’s a dark day,” Madison County Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler said. “When one hurts, we all hurt.”

“We are here to do whatever the sheriff’s department needs,” she added. “Whatever needs to be done, we’re there to help.”

May God be with the deputies involved and I pray that they get well soon. Madison is a very close net department. A large portion of the deputies have been then a while. Sheriff Tucker is a hell of guy and the men and women that work for him think the world of him. From what I understand the deputy that was shot in the head will have a long recovery. I know with everyone praying for him that he will make a full recovery.

My brother served Blue 20 years and retired. I breathed a sigh of relief. I was always worried - proud as punch of course - but yeah - you know what I mean. A year later, he’s going back in. Misses the service.Time to start praying again. Love you bro.
