Hero Down: Yonkers PD Det. William 'Sully' Sullivan Dies From Coronavirus
Yonkers, NY – Yonkers Police Department (YPD) Detective William “Sully” Sullivan died on Saturday after suffering complications associated with COVID-19, according to his department.
“It is with the utmost sorrow and broken hearts that the Yonkers Police Department announces the untimely passing of veteran Detective William Sullivan this afternoon due to complications associated with coronavirus disease,” the YPD said in a press release on Saturday night.
“Known as Sully to all,” Det. Sullivan served the YPD for over 25 years, the department said. “Beloved and cherished by all who knew him, Sully was an exceptional officer and human being; a devoted family-man, husband, brother, and father.”
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said that he and Det. Sullivan had been friends since elementary school, The Journal News reported.
“Sully was a colleague, dear friend, and family,” the mayor said in a Facebook post on Saturday evening. “One thing I have learned throughout my years is, blood is not what makes you family. Instead, the memories you share together do. God knows Sully, and I had our share of memories – but I would do anything for just one more.”
Det. Sullivan leaves behind his wife, Eileen, his daughter, Jacqueline, and his son, Yonkers Police Officer Will Sullivan.
“I will miss you dearly brother,” Spano wrote. “I love you. Until we meet again.”
Law enforcement officers from multiple jurisdictions stood at attention outside the 4th Precinct to honor Det. Sullivan as his procession passed by on Sunday, video footage showed.
“Words alone cannot express this profound loss,” the YPD said. “May he Rest in Peace.”
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Yonkers Police Department Detective William “Sully” Sullivan, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.
Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
