Hero Down: Wyandotte Deputy Patrick Rohrer Murdered During Court Transport

AWyandotte County sheriff's deputy was murdered and his partner remained in critical condition on Friday afternoon.

Kansas City, KS – Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Deputy Patrick Rohrer was murdered in the line of duty on Friday morning, as he and a fellow deputy were transporting an inmate to a hearing at the Wyandotte County Correctional and Court Services building.

The incident occurred at about 11:15 a.m. in a gated area of the court services building, Kansas City Kansas Police Chief Terry Zeigler said, according to The Kansas City Star.

As Deputy Rohrer and his unnamed female partner pulled into the parking lot, “they were overcome,” Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Major Kelli Bailiff said during a press conference at the University of Kansas Hospital.

"It is very possible that with their own firearm they were both shot," Maj. Bailiff said.

Deputy Rohrer, 35, died of his injures, WDAF reported on Friday afternoon.

He was a seven-year veteran of the department.

The female Wyandotte County deputy remained in critical condition as of Friday afternoon, according to KCFX.

The suspect who shot Deputy Rohrer was also hit in the gunfight, WDAF reported.

It was not known whether the suspect was shot by one of the deputies who had been hit, or if a third deputy stepped in, KCFX reported.

According to KCTV, the shooter was shackled and handcuffed.

He was expected to undergo surgery, police said during the press conference.

A spokesman for the Kansas City Kansas PD said there was video surveillance in the area where the incident occurred. He also said police believe the incident was limited to those involved, and authorities were not looking for any additional suspects.

A motorcade transported Deputy Rohrer’s body to the coroner’s office on Friday afternoon.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Deputy Patrick Rohrer, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Deputy Patrick Rohrer, your life mattered.

Why was the prisoner not fully restrained, shackles and all, waist belt, etc. I have been a prison chaser in the Marine Corp albeit many years ago. Is it cruel and unusual punishment now?
