Hero Down: Wadley Police Officer Daniel Thomas Killed In One-Vehicle Crash
Wadley, GA – Wadley Police Department (WPD) Officer Daniel Thomas died in a one-vehicle crash as he was heading home after a night shift on Aug. 25.
Officer Thomas was traveling to his home in Augusta after getting of work at 7 a.m., when he drove off of the roadway in a curve on U.S. Highway 1 South of Wrens, WJBF reported.
He overcorrected, at which point his vehicle crashed into a utility pole on the side of the roadway.
The force of the collision ejected Officer Thomas from the vehicle.
He was rushed to Jefferson Hospital in Louisville, where he was pronounced dead, WJBF reported.
“It’s with much grief and sadness that we the Wadley PD and City of Wadley inform you of the passing of Ptl. Daniel Thomas,” Wadley Police Chief Tommie Walker said in a Facebook post. “Thomas was such a devoted, patriotic, brave officer who loved helping people.”
“It's just mind-boggling, you know, to know that someone is headed home and then tragedy like this happens,” Chief Walker told WRDW. “It hurts.”
Chief Walker said that Officer Thomas had a promising career ahead of him.
"He was humble, he was a humble guy,” the chief noted. “I could've seen him going really far because he had that patience you know…he stayed quiet and listened to the people, took the report and did his job.”
The 2012 Glenn Hills High School graduate also served as a transporter with South Star Emergency Medical Services, according to his obituary.
Officer Thomas leaves behind his fiancé, Eleah Green, as well as his two-year-old daughter, Dania.
He is also survived by his brothers, his half-brother, and many friends and extended family members.
Officer Thomas was laid to rest on Saturday.
