Williamsburg, VA – Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail (VPRJ) Correctional Major Angelanette Moore died in the line of duty on Jan 23, after she suffered a heart attack while speaking with a group of inmates.

Correctional Maj. Moore, 40, was serving as the VPJR’s Director of Security Operations at the time of the medical emergency, VPRJ Superintendent Colonel Roy Witham said in a press release the following day.

She had completed a housing unit shakedown several hours before, and was wrapping up a disciplinary discussion with a group of inmates when she suddenly collapsed, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Medical personnel and her fellow correctional officers immediately began CPR, but they were unable to revive her.

Correctional Maj. Moore served the VPJR for over 20 years, according to Col. Witham.

“Words cannot properly express what Team VPRJ is feeling today,” he said. “We are all profoundly saddened by the untimely passing of Major Moore.”

He described Correctional Maj. Moore as an “admired and respected member of the VPRJ family,” who was also “100% dedicated to her chosen career in corrections.”

“She genuinely enjoyed her work, and was committed to training and developing her junior Officers,” Col. Witham added. “Major Moore’s presence was that of a strict but always fair professional.”

She was also dedicated to treating inmates respectfully and with proper care.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with Major Moore’s family during this tragic time, and we will continue to provide them with assistance as they grieve her loss,” Col Witham said.

Correctional Maj. Moore leaves behind her husband and son, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
