Millcreek, UT - Unified Police Department K9 Dingo was murdered in the line of duty on early Thursday while saving the lives of officers on scene.
The Unified Police department released the following details about the incident:
Members of the U.S. Marshal’s Violent Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team (VFAST) were conducting an operation in locating wanted parole fugitive Torey Chase Massey.
Massey was a parole fugitive wanted for theft, robbery, and aggravated assault. He was also suspected of fleeing from the Metro Gang Unit last week.
Tonight, at approximately 1 AM Massey was located driving in the Millcreek area. Officers attempted to disable his vehicle by using spike strips.
Even after spiking the car, Massey continued to flee in the vehicle. His vehicle came to a stop in the area of the Brickyard shopping plaza. He then attempted to run on foot. A UPD K9 was deployed with the intent of capturing Massey.
Officers heard the K9 engage Massey then heard a multitude of gunshots. Massey broke free and continued to run where he was ultimately captured by other officers.
Officers located their service dog critically wounded, where he was immediately taken to a nearby animal hospital and declared deceased. Massey is in custody of the US Marshal’s Office.
Salt Lake City Police will be conducting the investigation in the events surrounding the K9 murder. Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder, the Unified Police Department, and our numerous partners in law enforcement are heartbroken with the loss of our K9 partner.
Torey Massey lost his gun in the fight with Dingo. Thanks to the brave K9 disarming the suspect, officers' lives were saved.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Unified Police Department and Dingo's handler. Rest easy, hero. We'll hold the line fro there.
