Hero Down: Texas DPS Lt. Kevin Hugghins Loses Battle With Cancer

A 44-year-old DPS lieutenant passed away after a battle with cancer.

McKinney, TX – Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Lieutenant Kevin Hugghins died on Feb. 1, after a battle with cancer.

“The McKinney Police Department would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family of DPS Lt. Kevin Hugghins, along with the law enforcement family of the Texas Department of Public Safety,” the McKinney Police Department (MPD) said in a Facebook post on Thursday. “Kevin was a staple in the Collin County law enforcement community for many years and was respected by his peers and others who knew him.”

Lt. Hugghins, 44, was a married father of two daughters, according to his obituary.

He graduated in nearby Rusk, Texas in 1992, and later obtained a psychology degree at Texas A&M.

Lt. Hugghins joined the DPS in 1997 as a highway patrol trooper. He was promoted through the ranks throughout his career, ultimately serving as a lieutenant in the Office of the Inspector General.

“We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family of DPS Lt. Kevin Hugghins, along with the law enforcement family of the Texas Department of Public Safety,” Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said on Thursday. “He will be greatly missed.”
