Hero Down: Texarkana Arkansas Police Det. Holly Smith Succumbs To Cancer
Texarkana, AR – Texarkana Arkansas Police Department (TAPD) Detective Holly Smith died on March 25, following a yearlong battle with an aggressive, cancerous brain tumor.
Det. Smith, 37, was preparing to go on vacation with her family in March of 2019 when she started to experience numbness in her right foot, her husband, TAPD Corporal Billy Smith, told the Texarkana Gazette in December.
The following day, her entire right side was numb.
Doctors ultimately determined that an aggressive tumor on the left side of her brain had negatively affected the right side of her body, the Texarkana Gazette reported.
She was diagnosed with Stage IV glioblastoma.
In the weeks that followed, Det. Smith underwent two brain surgeries, the last of which left her with complete paralysis on her right side.
The couple temporarily relocated to Little Rock with their seven-year-old son, Ian, so that Det. Smith could undergo chemotherapy and daily radiation treatments.
The community rallied around them – holding fundraisers, mowing their lawn, and spending time with them at the hospital, the Texarkana Gazette reported.
By December, an MRI showed that the tumor was gone.
“The radiation did its job. The chemo did its job. She’s tumor-free now,” Cpl. Smith told the paper at the time.
Det. Smith was learning to walk again using a cane, and was hopeful that she would be able to resume her 15-year law enforcement career at some point in the future.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that TAPD announces the passing of Detective Holly Smith, after a year long battle with cancer,” the department said in a Facebook post last week. “She died today, March 25, 2020, with her loving husband, Corporal Billy Smith, and her beautiful family at her side.”
In addition to her husband, Det. Smith leaves behind her daughters, Havannah and Shelby, and her son, Ian, according to her obituary.
She is also survived by her mother and three sisters.
“Our collective hearts all mourn her passing and look forward to the day we will be reunited with her beautiful smile,” the TAPD said. “While the world is diminished with her passing, it is undoubtedly a better place for having known her. Holly, we love you and will miss you deeply.”
Det. Smith was laid to rest on Sunday.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Texarkana Arkansas Police Department Detective Holly Smith, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.
Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
