Hero Down: Savannah Police Sgt. Kelvin Ansari Murdered By Robbery Suspect
Savannah, GA - Sergeant Kelvin Ansari with the Savannah Police Department was murdered Saturday night while investigating a robbery.
The incident started at around 8:10 p.m. as officers were in the 2300 block of Bull Street, conducting a follow-up for a robbery, according to the department.
Officers located a vehicle matching the description of one they were looking for. Upon approaching the vehicle, the occupant of the vehicle opened fire on the officers.
Two officers were shot in the gunfight, and the suspect was destroyed.
Both officers were transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Sergeant Ansari succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The unidentified second officer was treated and released.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation will be conducting the shooting investigation.
Sergeant Ansari has been identified as a U.S. Army veteran with over two decades of service in the military, and a 10-year veteran of the Savannah Police Department.
