Hero Down: Rowlett Police Sgt. James 'Rick' Caillet Dies Of Medical Complication
Rowlett, TX – Rowlett Police Department Sergeant James “Rick” Richard Caillet died on Nov. 30 due to an unspecified medical issue.
Sgt. Caillet, 62, was assigned to the department’s day shift, and was a founding member of the agency’s Traffic Unit, according to the police department’s website.
He joined the Rowlett Police Department in 1992, and served as a patrolman, field training officer, accident investigator/reconstructionist, and officer in charge over the 26-year career that followed.
He also previously served with the Balch Springs Police Department.
Sgt. Caillet was promoted to the rank of corporal in 2003, and was also awarded the Police Chief’s Award of Excellence that same year.
In January of 2004, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant.
Sgt. Caillet played a key role in carrying out a comprehensive study and proposal that ultimately resulted in the formation of the agency’s Traffic Unit.
He also helped to establish the Fatal Vision Program, which was “designed to simulate various levels of intoxication through the wearing of special eyewear,” the department explained.
Many citizens have attended the sergeant’s Fatal Vision seminar, including high school students and church groups.
He was also taught classes at the department’s Citizens Police Academy.
Sgt. Caillet was a motorcycle enthusiast, and served as the President of the Rowlett chapter of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club, according to his obituary.
He was also the Treasurer of the Blue Knights International Motorcycle Club.
Sgt. Caillet leaves behind his wife of 43 years, Peggy, and his daughter, Elizabeth.
He is also survived by his brother, sister-in-law, nieces, nephew, and many friends and extended family members.
Sgt. Caillet was laid to rest on Dec. 5.
