Hero Down: Pittsburgh Police Officer Calvin Hall Murdered By Gunman

Off-duty Pittsburgh Police Officer Calvin Hall died three days after he was repeatedly shot in the back.

Pittsburgh, PA – Pittsburgh Police Officer Calvin Hall died on Wednesday morning, three days after he was repeatedly shot in the back while trying to break up a fight.

Officer Hall, 36, was off duty and visiting friends at a home on Monticello Street when the confrontation occurred, WPXI reported.

His uncle, Earnest Hall, said that Officer Hall was trying to break up a fight at the time, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

He was shot in the back three times during the altercation.

Officer Hall was rushed to UPMC Presbyterian, where he “fought valiantly for more than three days before succumbing to his injuries,” Pittsburgh Police Chief Scott Schubert said.

“We are investigating Officer Hall’s death as a homicide, and we are investigating the strong possibility, based on gathered evidence, that Officer Hall, who was off duty, was in fact acting under the color of the law when he was fatally shot,” Chief Schubert added.

No arrests have been made in connection with Officer Hall’s murder thus far.

Officer Hall served two years as a Point Park University police officer before he joined the Pittsburgh Police Department (PPD) two years ago, Point Park University Police Chief Jeffrey Besong said in a Facebook post.

Chief Besong said Officer Hall was an “exceptional officer” with “no shortage of people who loved [him].”

“This city has lost a great servant and ambassador,” Chief Besong added.

“We, as a Bureau, are heartbroken,” Chief Schubert said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “We are in mourning. We are supporting each other, and we are keeping Officer Hall’s family in our prayers and doing whatever we can to support and lift them in this dark, devastating time.”

Officer Hall was assigned to the Northview Heights Public Safety Center, and was well-known “for his quick smile, ever-optimistic attitude, and for his career-long focus on community policing,” Chief Schubert noted.

He was a “model officer” who “left an indelible mark on his brother and sister officers, as well as the community he served,” the chief added.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto has ordered that flags be lowered to half-staff at city buildings in honor of Officer Hall’s service.

“On behalf of all residents of the City of Pittsburgh I want to express my deepest condolences to the family, friends and coworkers of Officer Hall, a man who was deeply committed to his public service to the community,” Peduto said in a press release. “The coming days will once again be difficult ones for our city, as we come together to mourn in pain and sadness.”

Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman also extended his condolences in a Twitter post on Wednesday.

“I am heartbroken for the loss of Officer Hall. He served our community with integrity, empathy, and professionalism,” Fetterman wrote. “He was a supreme credit [to] our force in Braddock as he was for Pittsburgh.”

Officer Hall leaves behind his fiancé, as well as his family, friends, and fellow officers, Peduto said.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Pittsburgh Police Officer Calvin Hall, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.

Tragic Loss of a Good Community Servant! Even though he wasn't wearing the colors that day, he acted in service as if he was. This only goes to show that that when we are not on official duty, we are still on duty. My condolences to his family, friends and community!

If he was breaking up a fight inside a home, visiting friends, why is no one under arrest?? Someone in that residence knows who did this!!! They murdered a police officer!!

This is a horrible indictment on the black community. He was "at a friends house", 'his uncle watched get shot", yet there are "no arrests made"? It reminds me of a few years ago, when Bill O'Reilly had a black resident of the south side of Chicago on. The man had just lost his 5 year old daughter to a drive by shooting. Bill asked him if he would support "stop and frisk" after what happened to his daughter. The man said he would not. What on earth will it take for the black community to quit embracing criminality and start embracing law and order?
