Hero Down: Pinellas Co. Deputy Kevin Levi Found Dead Of Self-Inflicted Gunshot

Holly Matkin

Pinellas County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Levi served his department for over 15 years.

St. Petersburg, FL – Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) Deputy Kevin Levi died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Tuesday.

The 42-year-old deputy’s body was found inside his residence at approximately 6:35 p.m., the PCSO said in a press release.

“Detectives say Deputy Levi suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the department said. “The death is considered a suicide.”

In a Facebook post on Wednesday evening, Deputy Levi’s wife, Lauren, said that she and those who were closest to her husband are “struggling to accept the reality that he is gone.”

“The light has gone out of our lives,” the grieving widow wrote. “Our hearts are completely broken.”

Lauren described her husband as a “funny, smart, and passionate” man who was also “the epitome of class and grace.”

“He had a way of making everyone feel included, safe, and wanted. He was dedicated and driven, compassionate and caring. He was our protector - and he was your protector, too,” she wrote.

Deputy Levi joined the PCSO in July of 2004, and was assigned to the Patrol Operations Bureau, according to the department’s press release.

He received multiple commendations and “awards for bravery, selflessness, and skill” during his 15 years of service, Lauren said.

“He saved lives, calmed children, and rescued as many dogs as he could, often taking them for ride alongs in his cruiser before dropping them safe and sound at the emergency vet,” she added.

In addition to his wife, Deputy Levi also leaves behind his parents, stepfather, sister, stepsiblings, and many friends and extended family members.

A fundraising page established to help pay for Deputy Levi’s memorial service has raised over $17,000 so far.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Kevin Levi, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.

With those glasses and that haircut, I can imagine what kind of person he was.

I wish that urban youth and urban culture held more respect for the officers that do so much to help them. It seems that they’re far too sensitive about rich basketball players’ deaths (although that is tragic). Yet when it comes to hardworking officers in their communities and issues of suicide, no support is seen. Inner city leaders need to be held to a better standard, to help get urban culture back on track!

We are having to many officers taking their on lives and at some point they need to slow down and start helping one another. It doesn't take few minutes to ask if your brother is doing okay. Please stop and start talking.
