Phoenix Police Commander Greg Carnicle served his department for 31 years before he was murdered on Sunday night.

Phoenix, AZ – Phoenix Police Department (PPD) Commander Greg Carnicle was murdered in the line of duty by an active shooter on Sunday night.

Commander Carnicle, a 31-year veteran of the police force, was just months away from retirement, Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said during a press conference after the attack, according to KTVK.

The incident began at approximately 7 p.m. on March 29 when several roommates got into an argument at a home near Pinnacle Peak Road and 43rd Avenue.

Someone placed a call to police, at which point Commander Carnicle and two other officers responded to the scene, KTVK reported.

The officers attempted to speak with one of the individuals involved in the disturbance, but he was uncooperative, Phoenix Police Sergeant Mercedes Fortune said, according to the Sun City Independent.

The gunman ultimately opened fire inside the residence, hitting all three officers, KTVK reported.

Witnesses said that the gunman also fired multiple rounds at a police drone flying overhead during the ensuing standoff.

Officers were able to return fire, and a tactical unit later found the suspect dead inside the home hours after the initial shooting, KTVK reported.

The two female officers who were shot alongside Commander Carnicle were rushed to a hospital.

Officer Alicia Hubert was shot in her lower extremities, but is expected to recover from her wounds, KNXV reported.

Officer Marissa Dowhan underwent surgery, and is also expected to recover from her wounds.

Chief Williams announced Commander Carnicle’s death during the press conference on Sunday night.

"Phoenix lost a true hero – and that person is Greg Carnicle," she said, according to KTVK.

Chief Williams said she had known Commander Carnicle for three decades, and that they had worked together at the Maryvale Precinct in the past.

"To be able to stand here today and say that one of my good friends is lost is troubling,” she said, according to the Sun City Independent.

Commander Carnicle served in multiple capacities during his distinguished career, including the K9 Unit and the Special Assignments Unit, the PPD Said in a Facebook post.

He oversaw all weekend and evening patrol operations for the department at the time of his murder – a position he had specifically requested.

"After a decorated career spent keeping PHX safe, he had his choice of assignments. He volunteered to be a Night Commander—this is the truest sign of the integrity of his character,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego tweeted on Sunday night.

“No words are adequate to express my sadness for Commander Carnicle’s family and @PhoenixPolice,” the mayor wrote.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey also extended his condolences on Twitter on Sunday night.

“Our deepest condolences go out to Commander Carnicle’s family and loved ones over this heartbreaking loss,” Ducey wrote. “Our prayers are with them during this difficult time. We also pray for his fellow officers and their recovery.”

Commander Carnicle leaves behind his wife and four adult children, KTVK reported.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Phoenix Police Department Commander Greg Carnicle, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Commander Greg Carnicle, your life mattered.

I put this TRAGEDY squarely at the foot of the Phoenix City Mayor and her ilk. They hate police and lose no opportunity to make people understand that. We used to be a decent city with decent leaders...now we have this abomination of a lady mayor who just recently launched a citizen "oversight" committee...in fact, she was the tie breaking vote. Tells you all you need to know about this loser bitch.
