Hero Down: NYPD Detective Raymond Abear Dies From Coronavirus
New York, NY – New York Police Department (NYPD) Detective Raymond Abear died on Monday after contracting COVID-19.
The 44-year-old detective had been with the department for 19 years, according to the New York Post.
Det. Abear served in the NYPD’s Special Victims Division in Queens, but was temporarily assigned to the Special Victims Night Watch at the time of his death.
The decorated officer had previously been named as Detective of the Month by the Detectives’ Endowment Association (DEA), Newsday reported.
“Our detectives, like every NYPD member, are out there on the front line and have a high risk of contracting this terrible virus,” DEA President Paul DiGiacomo during a recent interview, according to the New York Post. “It’s a very dangerous time for New York City detectives and all first responders.”
DiGiacomo said that law enforcement officers are struggling with the near-impossible task of protecting themselves from attacks on multiple fronts.
“You’re out there risking your life every day, one, from the criminal element, and two, from what I call the invisible bullet, this coronavirus,” he said, according to the New York Post. “Then you are going home and possibly taking it home to your families, which is very disturbing for all first responders.”
Det. Abear succumbed to the illness within hours of fellow NYPD Detective Jeffrey Scalf falling victim to the same disease.
“Detectives Raymond Abear and Jeff Scalf dedicated their lives to fighting crime and tirelessly serving the people of New York City,” DiGiacomo told WABC. “This is a very sad time for the DEA, but as we mourn the losses of our brothers in blue - New York City Detectives will not relent in their commitment to keeping this city safe.”
“We make a solemn vow to never forget our fallen, and to forever support the families of these heroes,” he added.
Det. Abear leaves behind his wife and two children, according to the New York Post.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of New York Police Department Detective Raymond Abear, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.
Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
