Hero Down: Newark Police Sgt. Michael Clegg Succumbs To COVID-19 Complications

Newark Police Sergeant Michael Clegg served his department for 27 years.

Summit, NJ – Newark Police Department (NPD) Sergeant Michael Clegg died on May 10 due to coronavirus complications.

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka announced the 53-year-old police sergeant’s death in a joint statement later in the day.

“Our hearts are broken by the news of Sergeant Clegg’s passing,” Director Ambrose wrote. “A 27-year tenure of public service results in strong bonds of brotherhood among fellow police officers.”

Director Ambrose said that Sgt. Clegg was “highly respected by his colleagues and was extremely respectable in his demeanor” with citizens in the community.

“We lost a good man,” the director wrote. “May he rest in peace.”

Sgt. Clegg joined the department in May of 1993.

During his nearly three decades with the NPD, he served in the 4th and 5th Precincts, and was assigned to the 1st Precinct at the time of his death.

“The loss of Sergeant Clegg is felt deeply throughout our ranks,” Newark Police Chief Darnell Henry said in the release. “He was a consistently reliable police officer and was known as an excellent supervisor.”

“Sergeant Clegg blended the finest traditions from over a quarter century in policing with today’s best practices of impeccable community service and leadership of other officers,” Chief Henry continued. “We extend our most heartfelt condolences to his family.”

Sgt. Clegg leaves behind his mother, Rosalia, as well as his sister, Tammy.

He is also survived by his nephew and four nieces.
