New York City DOC Investigator David Perez served his department for over 10 years.

New York, NY – New York City Department of Correction (DOC) Investigator David Perez died on Sunday morning due to complications from COVID-19.

Investigator Perez, 56, worked at the department headquarters in Queens, according to the New York Daily News.

On the day of his death, the DOC notified employees that someone within the agency had tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

“One person who worked in close proximity to the employee is under 14-day quarantine and we will continue to trace close contacts,” Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Peter Thorne told the New York Daily News at the time.

Investigator Perez, who also suffered from preexisting medical conditions, passed away at approximately 11:30 p.m.

DOC Commissioner Cynthia Brann notified employees about Investigator Perez’s death on Monday.

He had no contact with people in custody for at least one month prior to his passing, Commissioner Brann noted.

“Last night, a member of DOC staff who had tested positive for COVID-19 passed away at a local hospital," the commissioner confirmed, according to the New York Daily News.

“We are heartbroken and send our deepest condolences to our colleague’s family, loved ones, and co-workers,” she continued. "As we endure this loss to our community, we will continue to do everything to keep our facilities safe for everyone. Consistent with CDC and DOHMH guidance, anyone who was in close contact with this individual has been notified and appropriate precautions taken.”

Investigator Perez served the department for over a decade, the New York Daily News reported.

“There will be challenging days of ahead of us,” Commissioner Brann told the DOC employees. “We ask you to remain vigilant and follow all of the established protocols in order to protect yourselves and others from COVID-19. Together we will get through this.”

Investigator Perez’s brother, Raymond Perez, said his family is struggling to cope with their devastating loss.

“We’re in the midst of a lot of stress, a lot of grief,” Raymond told the New York Daily News. “My brother was one of the best men on earth – very honorable. He cared for his mother up until the last day he lived with her.”

He said that his brother will be “deeply missed” by all who knew him.

“He was just a great, great guy,” Raymond told the New York Daily News.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio also confirmed Investigator Perez’s death during a press conference on Monday, the New York Daily News reported.

“To our Department of Correction colleague who we lost, our condolences to his family,” de Blasio said. “We will do all we can to help them during this incredibly difficult time.”

You've gotta ask yourself a few questions, how sure are they that the virus actually caused his death? what was his preexisting condition? How long do they think he had this before he died? I really don't think we are hearing the whole story here.
