Hero Down: Miccosukee Police Sgt. Steven Greco Killed By Wrong-Way Driver

Miccosukee Police Sergeant Steven Greco leaves behind his wife, who is pregnant with their first child.

Broward County, FL – Miccosukee Police Sergeant Steven Greco was killed on his way home from work on Saturday morning, when a wrong-way driver crashed into his vehicle head-on.

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 5 a.m. on a stretch of I-75 known as Alligator Alley, WTVJ reported.

Sgt. Greco was traveling eastbound in his 2018 Dodge Charger, when 32-year-old Curtis Woolwine slammed into him head-on with his 2016 Chevrolet Sonic.

Woolwine, who was traveling the wrong way when he caused the fatal collision, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sgt. Greco, 40, was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center by helicopter, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The factors that contributed to the fatal crash are still under investigation.

Sgt. Greco joined the Miccosukee Police Department (MPD) in March of 2018.

Earlier on the day he died, he was named as the MPD’s Officer of the Month, and was also presented a Department Lifesaving Award for heroically rescuing a motorist from a burning vehicle, saving his life, according to a fundraising page set up to assist his family in the wake of their loss.

He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.

His wife, Phoebe, was so overcome with grief when she was told about her husband’s death, she had to be hospitalized, his brother told WTVJ.

Phoebe is nine months pregnant with the couple’s first child – a little girl, according to the fundraising page.

He is also survived by his brother, who serves as a deputy sheriff.

"The [Miccosukee Tribe of the Indians of Florida] is providing support and assistance to the fallen officer's family," the Miccosukee Police Department told WTVJ.

Sgt. Greco was laid to rest on Wednesday, WTVJ reported.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Miccosukee Police Sergeant Steven Greco, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest in peace, Sergeant Greco. May God be with your family, both blood and blue - but most especially with your wife and soon to be born daughter. Thank you for your service to your community. For a LEO spouse to go from proud highs to heartbreaking lows on the same day - that is truly beyond words. May she and their daughter always feel the love of the LEO community.
